Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) has introduced a long-term strategy titled "Connected, Growing, and Protected" to accelerate the country's digital transformation through stronger and more inclusive digital infrastructure.
Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria said the strategy places connectivity at the center of Indonesia's digital development agenda. As part of the initiative, the ministry is preparing to auction the 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum bands to expand network coverage and improve broadband performance nationwide.
"The 700 MHz spectrum will help broaden network coverage because of its wide propagation range, while the 2.6 GHz spectrum will strengthen broadband services and deliver higher internet speeds for users," Nezar said during CNBC Indonesia's Economic Update 2026 forum, themed "Performance Achievements and Strategic Priorities of the Ministry", on Monday, June 22, 2026.
The spectrum allocation is expected to significantly enhance the quality and speed of Indonesia's internet and mobile data services. To achieve this goal, Komdigi continues to work closely with stakeholders across the telecommunications industry to improve network performance and expand digital connectivity.
Nezar emphasized that internet speeds must improve not only in major cities but across the entire country. To ensure more equitable digital development, the ministry has incorporated infrastructure obligations into the spectrum auction process. Telecommunications operators awarded spectrum licenses will be required to build high-quality networks in Indonesia's underdeveloped, frontier, and outermost (3T) regions, particularly in eastern Indonesia.
"For example, if an operator wins spectrum in Java, it must also develop infrastructure in Papua. Likewise, operators receiving licenses in other regions will have obligations to expand networks elsewhere. This shared responsibility is designed to accelerate digital access and improve service quality for all Indonesians," he explained.
According to Nezar, Indonesia's 4G base transceiver station (BTS) network now covers approximately 97 percent of inhabited areas. Meanwhile, the country's fiber-optic network has expanded to around 60 percent of the archipelago, while satellite connectivity continues to be strengthened to reach remote and underserved communities.
"These initiatives are intended to ensure connectivity reaches remote areas, including 3T regions, while also providing higher-capacity networks in locations with intensive economic activity where stronger digital infrastructure is essential," he said.
Spectrum Auctions to Accelerate Broadband Expansion
Komdigi expects the upcoming 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz spectrum auctions to play a crucial role in expanding broadband coverage, increasing network capacity, and delivering faster internet services to consumers and businesses across Indonesia.
The ministry believes the combination of wider coverage and higher bandwidth will strengthen the country's digital ecosystem and support future technologies that require reliable high-speed connectivity.
5G Rollout Continues Across Indonesia
Beyond broadband expansion, Komdigi is also working closely with telecommunications operators to accelerate the nationwide deployment of 5G networks.
Currently, 5G accounts for only 10–11 percent of Indonesia's overall mobile network coverage. However, with continued collaboration among the country's three major telecommunications operators, the government expects 5G availability to expand significantly in the coming years, supporting next-generation digital services, smart industries, and Indonesia's broader digital economy ambitions.
Conclusion
Through its "Connected, Growing, and Protected" strategy, Komdigi is accelerating the development of Indonesia's digital infrastructure by expanding broadband coverage, increasing internet speeds, and advancing 5G deployment. Combined with stronger connectivity in underserved regions, these initiatives aim to create a more inclusive and resilient digital ecosystem that supports the country's long-term digital transformation.
