Jakarta, INTI - Several Indonesian delegates are preparing to attend the 2nd WNI Weather & Climate Forecast Conference (WCFC) 2026 in Tokyo, Japan.
This forum aims to strengthen cross-national collaboration in utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for weather and climate systems in Asia.
Tovic Rustam, the Founder & Strategic Advisor to the Sakuranesia Foundation, said the Indonesian delegation will include the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), and subholdings within PT Pertamina (Persero).
"WCFC 2026 is not just about weather technology and AI, but how Asia is building a new, more integrated, sustainable, and human-safety-oriented future of collaboration amidst the challenges of global climate change," said Tovic.
BMKG and Weathernews Previous Partnership
The forum, scheduled for June 17, 2026, carries the theme "Leveraging AI for the Future of Asia’s Weather and Climate – The Frontline of Early Warning Systems and Regional Implementation."
According to Tovic, Indonesia, as a tropical archipelagic country prone to hydrometeorological disasters, has a strategic position in the forum. Indonesia's involvement is a continuation of the collaboration between BMKG and the conference organizer Weathernews Inc.
The two parties previously signed a collaboration titled "A Project for AI-Based Tropical Cyclone and Flood Forecasting in Indonesia" in February 2026 to strengthen tropical cyclone and flood early warning systems.
Strengthening Indonesia-Japan Collaboration
Sakuranesia Foundation Founder and Chairman, Sakura Ijuin, also encouraged the strengthening of Indonesia-Japan cooperation networks in education, technology, and future innovation.
She believes involvement from universities and PT Pertamina (Persero) in the forum will open opportunities for synergy between the academic, energy, and weather technology sectors, particularly related to risk mitigation and energy security.
The Acting Deputy for Meteorology at the BMKG, Andri Ramdhani, stated that the continued collaboration with the Japanese weather company aims to strengthen Indonesia's early warning system through the use of AI.
This step is part of the implementation of the global Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative to reduce the risk of hydrometeorological disasters.
"This partnership reflects a shared commitment to ensuring better weather and climate information," said Andri.
Conclusion
Several Indonesian delegations will attend the 2nd WCFC 2026 conference in Tokyo to strengthen collaboration on the use of AI in weather and climate systems in Asia. The delegation will include BMKG, UI, UGM, ITS, and PT Pertamina (Persero). The conference will discuss the development of an AI-based early warning system to address the risks of hydrometeorological disasters and climate change. Indonesia's involvement also continues the collaboration between BMKG and the Japanese company Weathernews Inc.
