3 weeks ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – On June 10, 2025, Located in London, Indonesia established a strategic collaboration with the UK to accelerate the development of a responsible and sustainable Artificial Intelligence (AI) ecosystem Indonesia established a strategic partnership with the UK. This was marked by a bilateral meeting between Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital (Komdigi) Nezar Patria and Director General of Digital Technology and Telecommunications from the UK Department of Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT), Emran Mian, which is an important event for sharing ideas between countries in global digital transformation.

Exchange Views and Experiences: Learning from the UK

Indonesia utilized this meeting to discuss and absorb the UK's experience in building an advanced digital ecosystem, especially in the field of AI. According to Nezar Patria, this discussion is very valuable to understand the best approaches in the development of smart technology and how to apply them to the Indonesian context.

“We are committed to strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation, especially in facing the challenges and opportunities of AI in the future,” Nezar said in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 11, 2025.

Three Main Focuses of Collaboration: Infrastructure, Talent, and Regulation

During the meeting, the two parties discussed three main aspects that are prioritized in AI cooperation.

1. AI Infrastructure Development

The UK has invested more than £1 billion (equivalent to Rp21.9 trillion) in the last four years to strengthen research and build large-scale data centers. Indonesia is encouraging the same by developing a national data center, accelerating AI chip production, and increasing computing capacity through cross-sector partnerships.

2. Digital Talent Development

Indonesia estimates the need for 9 million digital talents by 2030. In this discussion, the UK shared their strategy in building digital talent through a holistic approach: from technology education at the school level, and advanced education scholarships (masters and PhD), to retraining the workforce to be ready for AI transformation.

3. Safe and Ethical AI Governance

Both countries agree that AI development must be accompanied by a strong and adaptive regulatory framework. Indonesia has issued a Ministerial Circular Letter on AI Ethics and is preparing a comprehensive regulation. Meanwhile, the UK through the AI Security Institute is actively assessing AI risks and compiling security reports involving international panels, including Indonesia.

Responding to Social Challenges and Misinformation Risks

The discussion also covered the rapid adoption of AI in Indonesia. Surveys show that 80% of Indonesians see AI as beneficial. However, this acceleration also presents major challenges such as threats to employment - especially in media and broadcasting - as well as the potential spread of negative content and misinformation.

Nezar stated, “Collaboration with the UK is critical to learn how to balance innovation with mitigating social risks, including workforce disruption and the spread of harmful content.”

Agreed to Expand Collaboration in the Future

Both countries agreed to continue expanding cooperation in the future, including through joint programs that bring together talents and innovators from both sides. Indonesia also emphasized its open approach to the use of global AI models, as long as they remain aligned with national regulations and values.

This meeting is an important step in strengthening Indonesia-UK bilateral cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. This strategic collaboration is expected to create an AI ecosystem that is safe, inclusive, and has a positive impact on the people of both countries.
