Jakarta, INTI - PT Indofarma (Persero) Tbk (INAF) is strengthening efforts to transform Indonesia’s biodiversity into natural medicinal ingredients and pharmaceutical products through technological development, scientific research, and collaboration with universities and industry partners.
Indofarma President Director Sahat Sihombing said Indonesia’s rich medicinal plant resources offer significant economic potential that can be developed through continuous research and translated into marketable products.
“Indonesia is blessed with extraordinary biodiversity, including a wide range of plants with the potential to be developed into natural medicinal ingredients. This potential must be explored through scientific research, technological innovation, and close collaboration among universities, research institutions, and industry,” Sahat said in an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, October 28, 2026.
He explained that the main challenge in advancing the downstream processing of medicinal plants is not simply identifying natural ingredients with medicinal potential, but also ensuring that research findings can be developed into products that are safe, high-quality, effective, and compliant with applicable regulations.
Indofarma Prepares Production Facilities for Natural Medicines
Sahat explained that Indofarma has natural ingredient extraction capabilities and traditional medicine production facilities certified under Indonesia’s Good Traditional Medicine Manufacturing Practices (CPOTB).
These facilities provide the company with the industrial capacity to process natural ingredients, from extraction to finished product development.
Potential products include jamu (traditional Indonesian herbal medicine), standardized herbal medicines, and fitofarmaka (clinically validated herbal medicines), subject to applicable research, development, and registration requirements.
“The readiness of these industrial facilities is expected to bridge research findings with product development processes that meet quality standards and regulatory requirements,” Sahat said.
Indofarma expects its production facilities to help accelerate the transformation of medicinal plant research into products with commercial value.
Indofarma Partners with Danantara and ITB to Commercialize Research
As part of its efforts to strengthen downstream development, Indofarma has signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Danantara Development Management Fund, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and PT EBM Saintifik dan Teknologi.
The agreement covers the exploration of collaboration to develop medicinal plant research with significant economic potential.
Through the partnership, the parties will explore research development opportunities, evaluate processing technologies, and identify potential funding and investment opportunities.
The collaboration is also intended to create pathways for natural-based products to progress toward commercialization, in accordance with each party’s respective authority and capabilities.
Sahat expressed hope that synergies among industry players, research institutions, universities, and funding partners would strengthen the utilization of Indonesia’s biodiversity within the pharmaceutical sector.
He also called on stakeholders to work together to develop the potential of Indonesia’s natural medicinal resources as part of the advancement of the national healthcare industry.
Conclusion
Indofarma is advancing the commercialization of Indonesia’s medicinal plant resources through research, technology, and partnerships with Danantara, ITB, and industry players. The initiative aims to transform scientific findings into safe, high-quality natural medicine products while strengthening the domestic pharmaceutical industry.
