Government Accelerates Equal Distribution of Internet Access for 2,500 Villages by 2026

5 months ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI — Efforts to equalize internet access have once again come into focus as the government reaffirms its major target to bring connectivity to 2,500 villages that still lack digital network access. The issue of access disparity experienced by rural communities is considered to hinder equitable public services, education, and economic opportunities. However, through the launch of the Indonesia Digital development roadmap, the government has outlined concrete solutions to expand connectivity. This commitment was conveyed during the Declaration of Indonesia’s Digital Direction held in South Jakarta on Wednesday, as part of the government’s strategic steps toward 2026.

Equal Access for Public Services and Rural Economic Growth

The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, emphasized that equal connectivity is a vital foundation for improving the quality of life in rural communities. With adequate internet access, residents can benefit from digital-based education services, faster public services, and broader economic opportunities.

According to Meutya, disparities in connectivity still persist across several regions, requiring special attention. “Development in areas that remain left behind will be a priority in 2026,” she said.

Positive Impact of 2023–2024 Infrastructure Now Visible

Over the past two years, the government has carried out extensive digital infrastructure development. Meutya stated that its impact has begun to be seen across various regions in Eastern Indonesia, such as Papua, South Papua, Gorontalo, East Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, and South Sulawesi. Communities are beginning to experience improvements in communication access, more efficient government services, and growing business opportunities.

“We hope this development can strengthen governance and public services, including in the eastern regions of Indonesia,” she added.

Optimizing Technology Utilization for Greater Economic Impact

Although the infrastructure has been established, the next challenge is maximizing its use. According to Meutya, the existing technological capacity has not yet been fully utilized to generate greater economic impact.

“The technology is already operating and its impact is already being felt, but its potential can still be pushed much further,” she explained. She added that the digital space must serve as a shared platform for communities, businesses, and the government to grow and create added value.

Indonesia Digital: Connected, Growing, and Secure

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs is formulating the direction of Indonesia Digital development, focusing on three key aspects:

  • Connected ensuring equitable internet access across all regions.
  • Growing strengthening an inclusive digital economy.
  • Secure creating a safe digital space protected from cyber threats.

Digital transformation is not only aimed at advancing technology but also ensuring that its benefits are felt by all layers of society.

Conclusion

With the ambitious target of providing internet access to 2,500 villages by 2026, the government affirms its strong commitment to eliminating the digital divide. Through continuous infrastructure development and optimization of its utilization, digital transformation is expected to strengthen public services, stimulate rural economic growth, and create a safe and productive digital environment for all Indonesians.
