Jakarta, INTI – Artificial intelligence (AI) continues to develop at a faster pace than many people can even imagine. But does this progress pose a real threat to humanity?
Geoffrey Hinton, a legendary figure known as one of the “Godfathers of AI”, shared a view that is worth pondering. In his interview with CBS, Hinton likened the development of AI to raising a cute tiger cub: “Unless you can be absolutely sure it won't kill you when it grows up, you should be careful.”
The key figures behind modern AI
As a 2024 Nobel laureate and the originator of AI training methods that are now used in popular models like ChatGPT, Geoffrey Hinton is not just anybody. He is one of the key minds behind the rapid advancement of AI today.
However, precisely because of his proximity to this technology, Hinton has also become one of its leading critics. He even resigned from Google in 2023 in order to be free to talk about the risks of AI without burdening the reputation of the company he works for.
AI and Global Threats
Hinton stated that if the pace of AI development is not properly controlled, the risk to humans is huge. One of his biggest concerns is if AI is used in military weapon systems, citing the possibility that AI could “take over” human life-though he admits that this is still a rough prediction, with a 10-20% chance.
“I even have to agree with Elon Musk on this,” Hinton said, alluding to the controversial figure who also actively warns of the dangers of AI, while at the same time developing his own company's AI chatbot.
Tech Industry Inconsistency
Hinton also voiced his disappointment with the changing attitudes of some major tech companies, such as Google, which initially rejected the use of AI for military purposes, but is now starting to open up in that direction.
Conclusion
Geoffrey Hinton, as a key figure in the history of AI development, reminds us that technological progress without limitations can be a double-edged knife. Policies, regulations, and collective consciousness are needed for AI to remain a tool for humans and not a threat.
