Electric Trams and Low-Emission Zones to Drive Jakarta’s Sustainable Old Town Revitalization

18 hours ago | E-MOBILITY

Jakarta, INTI - The Jakarta Provincial Government, together with the management of the Old Town area, is preparing a major revitalization program that includes the development of an electric tram system and the implementation of a Low Emission Zone (LEZ). The initiative is part of a broader strategy to transform Jakarta’s historic Old Town into a world-class tourism destination.

Electric Tram and LEZ to Revitalize Jakarta’s Historic District

Head of the Jakarta Old Town Management Unit, Denny Aputra, stated that one of the key initiatives is the establishment of a Low Emission Zone, which will gradually restrict conventional vehicle access once the revitalization project is fully completed.

The LEZ concept is expected to preserve the district’s historical character while promoting more sustainable tourism and environmentally friendly transportation.

The Jakarta government also plans to reintroduce the tram system that once operated in the Old Town area, but with modern electric technology.

According to Denny, the future electric tram will follow the historical route of the former tram network. The line is planned to pass through key tourism areas within Old Town and connect strategic locations, including the Sunda Kelapa area, although the final route remains under government review.

Integrated Mobility Supports Jakarta’s Global City Vision for 2029

The electric tram and LEZ initiatives are part of a larger revitalization effort that combines heritage preservation, tourism development, and sustainable urban transportation.

The Old Town area will also benefit from improved integration with Jakarta’s mass transportation network, including the MRT, TransJakarta bus system, and Jakarta Kota Railway Station.

The revitalization aims not only to restore the historical significance of the district but also to enhance accessibility and comfort for visitors.

Denny explained that the Governor views the tram as an important element of Jakarta’s transportation heritage, helping revive the city’s historical identity while supporting the goal of positioning Jakarta as a global city by 2029.

Currently, the Jakarta Provincial Government remains focused on completing the MRT Lebak Bulus–Kota route, which is targeted to begin operation in early 2029 and will strengthen connectivity to the Old Town district.

Conclusion

Jakarta’s plan to introduce electric trams and a Low Emission Zone reflects the city’s commitment to creating a more sustainable and integrated urban environment. By combining heritage preservation, green mobility, and modern public transportation, the Old Town revitalization is expected to strengthen Jakarta’s ambition of becoming a global city by 2029.
