eBay Introduces Climate Plan With Net-Zero Target for 2045

4 months ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - E-commerce company eBay announced its first climate transition plan on Wednesday, outlining stronger efforts to decarbonize both its operations and supply chain as part of its commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2045.

The plan has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), an independent body, and builds on eBay’s earlier target to power all of its facilities with 100% renewable electricity by 2025, a milestone the company reached ahead of schedule in 2024.

Chief Sustainability Officer Renee Morin said eBay is aligning its strategy with the global goal of limiting temperature increases to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, in line with the Paris Agreement.

Amazon’s Carbon Neutral Commitment

Since 2019, eBay has reduced operational emissions by 92% and cut transportation-related emissions by 21%, moving toward its 2030 reduction target of 27.5%.

Looking ahead, the company plans to further expand renewable energy use, scale low-carbon shipping innovations, and promote resale and reuse options among users to help reduce emissions and waste.

Shipping accounts for 84% of eBay's Scope 3 emissions, those from across its value chain, making it the toughest challenge, Morin said.

"We are collaborating with carriers who offer local pickup or switching from planes to trucks with some of our vendors. We have to be creative to achieve our goals," she added.

Among its industry peers, Amazon.com Inc. committed in 2019 to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, while China’s Alibaba Group followed in 2021 with a pledge to reach carbon neutrality before the end of the decade.

Conclusion

The commitments made by Amazon and Alibaba reflect a broader shift among major technology and e-commerce companies toward climate responsibility. These pledges highlight growing pressure on global corporations to align their operations with long-term sustainability and net-zero goals.
