Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Stella Christie Emphasizes That AI Development in Indonesia Must Be Based on Ethics

Jakarta, INTI - Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Stella Christie, emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia must be grounded in ethical values during a forum held in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22.

The Importance of Ethics and Human Advantage

Stella highlighted that human abstract thinking remains a key advantage that should not be lost amid the rapid advancement of AI.

“Our ability to make abstractions and understand concepts from limited data is something that must not disappear. This should be preserved in education and daily life, as it is our strength compared to AI,” she said.

She explained that AI heavily relies on large datasets, while humans are capable of understanding concepts deeply even from limited experience.

According to her, the education system plays a crucial role in developing critical and conceptual thinking skills, not just technical abilities.

AI as Both Opportunity and Challenge

Stella noted that the rapid development of AI continues to spark debate in society due to its mixed impacts, both positive and negative.

“Therefore, it is important for us to continue learning how to think and contribute to new knowledge for humanity. This is a core responsibility of higher education,” she stated.

She added that AI can pose risks such as cybersecurity threats and misinformation, but it can also be leveraged as a tool for fact-checking and expanding access to education.

She further stressed that AI development in Indonesia should be directed toward addressing national needs and solving complex, data-driven challenges.

Conclusion

Ethical grounding is becoming a critical foundation in the development of artificial intelligence in Indonesia. As AI continues to evolve rapidly, balancing technological advancement with human-centered values is essential. By strengthening critical thinking in education and ensuring responsible innovation, Indonesia can harness AI not only as a tool for efficiency, but also as a solution-oriented technology that supports national needs while minimizing potential risks such as misinformation and cybersecurity threats.
