Kemkomdigi Meets with Wikimedia Today, Decisions will be Finalized

6 minutes ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - The Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, revealed that the government will hold a meeting with the Wikimedia Foundation regarding Wikipedia's operational status in Indonesia. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 23, as part of an ongoing process.

Last week, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) gave the Wikimedia Foundation an ultimatum to immediately complete its registration as an Electronic System Operator (Penyelenggara Sistem Elektronik/PSE). Failure to fulfill this obligation could result in Wikipedia's services being blocked in Indonesia.

The Wikimedia Foundation was given seven working days to complete the registration process. The Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Alexander Sabar, emphasized that the government is prepared to impose sanctions, as the deadline is considered sufficient.

Registration was Urged Since Last Year

Previously, Kemkomdigi had asked Wikimedia to register since November 14, 2025. However, after several requests for extensions, the process still has not been completed. In the latest extension, the government emphasized that it would take firm action in the form of blocking if there is no compliance with regulations.

The blocking will impact not only Wikipedia but also other services under Wikimedia, such as Wikimedia Commons. The obligation to register PSE itself is regulated in the Minister of Communication and Information Regulation Number 5 of 2020, which applies to all digital platforms, both commercial and non-profit, with sanctions ranging from warnings to service blocking.

Conclusion

Meutya Hafid stated that the government will meet with the Wikimedia Foundation regarding the PSE registration obligations today. Failure to register could result in Wikimedia services like Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons being blocked in Indonesia. The government emphasized that the deadline is sufficient and is prepared to impose strict sanctions in accordance with regulations.
