This marked the first time such an AI-driven sporting event was held in China, serving as a warm-up for the upcoming World Humanoid Robot Games in the capital.
Unlike conventional matches that rely on players, coaches, and referees, every aspect of this game was managed autonomously by the robots. Equipped with advanced visual sensors, the robots could identify the ball’s location, track opponents’ movements, and create real-time strategies. Their agility, ability to execute accurate passes and shots, and even stand up after falling added to the realism of the event.

Cheng Hao, founder and CEO of Booster Robotics, the company supplying the robot hardware, explained that football provides the perfect conditions to test AI performance and robot durability. “Football presents countless variables that demand quick and precise responses. It’s the most challenging environment for measuring a robot’s ability to think and adapt,” he stated.

Cheng further noted that the long-term goal is not just to develop athletic robots but to build public trust in humanoid robotics and their safety. He even envisions future matches where humans and robots play side by side on the same team.
“It’s not about winning or losing. It’s about interacting robots and humans defending and attacking together. That’s how we help the public realize robots can be trusted and are safe,” he said. While Booster Robotics provided the hardware, each university team developed their own AI algorithms, including decision-making, formations, and passing strategies.
A Competitive Final and Enthusiastic Crowd
In the final match, THU Robotics from Tsinghua University triumphed over Mountain Sea from China Agricultural University with a score of 5–3. The game was fast-paced and thrilling, even featuring moments when robots had to be stretchered off the field adding a layer of realism akin to actual football matches.
One Tsinghua supporter, Mr. Wu, expressed his excitement about the victory. “They played amazingly. But Mountain Sea was also impressive. Both teams delivered a match that was just as exciting as any human game,” he said.
