Jakarta, INTI — Microsoft co-founder and global philanthropist Bill Gates has expressed strong optimism about the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in improving the quality of education in Indonesia. In a meeting with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Gates emphasized that AI can be a transformative tool for students and educators across all levels of education.
AI for More Equitable and Higher-Quality Education
During his discussion with President Prabowo, Gates highlighted that access to AI-powered learning tools can help students grasp material more effectively and efficiently. According to him, AI allows learners to go beyond traditional textbooks, enabling them to access information in a more personalized and interactive manner.
Gates cited Khanmigo, an AI-based learning assistant developed by the nonprofit Khan Academy supported by the Gates Foundation as a concrete example of how AI can be applied in education. “I strongly believe that access to learning tools like AI will significantly support teaching and learning processes,” Gates stated.
Investing in Education and Health: Foundations for the Future
Bill Gates also underscored the deep connection between education, health, and national economic growth. He argued that the quality of a country's human resources depends not only on education but also on the overall health of its population. “The healthier children are, and the less malnutrition among women, the greater their chances of receiving a good education,” he said.
He cited Singapore as a successful example of how a strong focus on education can translate into broader economic prosperity. Gates expressed hope that Indonesia could follow a similar path and become a leader in AI adoption in Southeast Asia.
Teachers Remain Central to the Education Ecosystem
While optimistic about AI, Gates stressed that technology should complement not replace the role of teachers. He noted the need for ongoing teacher training and professional development to improve education quality. “In some countries, the political position of teachers is very strong,” he remarked, emphasizing that human educators remain an essential pillar of any learning system.
Significant Financial Support: Billions of Rupiah for Indonesia’s Tech Future
During his visit, Gates also announced a US$159 million grant (approximately IDR 2.6 trillion) through the Gates Foundation, which will be allocated across several strategic sectors. The breakdown of the grant includes:
- US$119 million for the health sector
- US$5 million for education technology
- US$5 million for agriculture
- US$30 million for cross-sectoral initiatives
Since 2009, Gates has donated a total of US$300 million to Indonesia to support social and human development programs.
Conclusion: AI as a Catalyst, Not a Standalone Solution
Bill Gates’ visit to Jakarta marks an important signal that Indonesia is gaining recognition as a nation with significant potential in the field of artificial intelligence. However, Gates reminded that while AI is a powerful tool, it is not a standalone solution. Quality education must be built on solid foundations: competent teachers, a healthy population, and an inclusive, equitable education system.
AI can accelerate learning, expand access to knowledge, and improve efficiency. But ultimately, it is the quality of the Indonesian people that will determine the nation’s future.
