Jakarta, INTI - The Ambon City Government has officially taken a major step toward realizing Ambon as a Smart City through the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology.
Currently, the city administration is piloting AI-based CCTV systems at several strategic locations to enhance public services in real time.
The Head of the Ambon City Office of Communication, Informatics, and Encryption, Ronald Lekransy, explained that the technology goes beyond simple video recording and includes advanced video analytics capable of automatically detecting violations. This initiative forms a key part of the Smart Governance and Smart Environment pillars prioritized in the city’s development strategy.
Smart Surveillance for Traffic and Waste Management
The trial is currently focused on two main sectors:
Traffic Monitoring (Tulukabessy Intersection): CCTV units at this site are equipped with Automatic License Plate Recognition (ALPR) technology to identify vehicles driving against traffic flow or parking illegally. The system actively tracks violations automatically, particularly during peak hours.
Waste Management (Batu Merah Public Cemetery Area): In this location, AI is used to monitor trash volume and send automatic alerts when bins are full, as well as detect individuals who dispose of waste outside scheduled times.
Lekransy emphasized that during the pilot phase, the system will continuously undergo machine learning processes to adapt to real conditions in Ambon.
The data generated will serve as strong digital evidence for law enforcement and as a foundation for smarter, more measurable policy decisions by the city government.
The implementation of this smart technology is expected to encourage more orderly public behavior while ensuring Ambon becomes a cleaner, safer, and more modern city.
Conclusion
Ambon’s AI-based smart CCTV initiative highlights how artificial intelligence can transform urban management by enhancing safety, cleanliness, and public service efficiency. Through real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making, the city is paving the way toward a more modern, orderly, and sustainable Smart City ecosystem.
