AI’s Role Seen as Crucial in Bridging Healthcare Gaps in Indonesia

1 day ago | Digital Health

Jakarta, INTI - The use of AI is considered a key factor in bridging healthcare service gaps in Indonesia, especially amid rising medical costs and unequal access to care. This was highlighted in a discussion titled “Medix’s Perspective on the Indonesian Healthcare Landscape and How AI is Redefining Healthcare Services” organized by Medix Global recently.

Featuring Medix Global’s Founder and CEO Sigal Atzmon and Chief Business Officer Jonathan Sternberg, the discussion served as a strategic dialogue platform between Medix and the media to explore challenges, opportunities, and the future of healthcare and insurance in Indonesia.

Indonesia, a Strategic Market for Medix

In recent years, Medix has actively partnered with leading insurance and reinsurance companies in Indonesia to develop more affordable and sustainable healthcare service models. The country is considered one of Medix’s most important markets in Southeast Asia.

This is not without reason: Indonesia ranks 8th globally in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2024-2025, the largest economy in Southeast Asia, and is a G20 member. In terms of purchasing power, it even surpasses several developed countries such as the UK and France. Yet, despite this economic strength, the healthcare sector still faces significant challenges.

“Behind Indonesia’s impressive economic achievements, the healthcare system still faces high medical cost inflation and unequal access to services. This presents both a challenge and an opportunity for innovation,” said Sigal Atzmon.

Several sources indicate that medical cost inflation in Indonesia reached around 19.8% in 2025, well above the Asian average of approximately 13.2%. This situation has prompted health insurance companies to raise premiums significantly, in some cases by up to 100% for certain products.

In response, the Financial Services Authority (OJK) has introduced new regulations, including the implementation of co-payment schemes for policyholders and the mandatory establishment of health advisory boards within insurance companies. These policies aim to strengthen governance and ensure the sustainability of the national health insurance ecosystem.

AI and Digitalization Transform the Healthcare Landscape

Medix believes that the advancement of AI and digitalization has had a tangible impact on Indonesia’s healthcare system. Various government and private initiatives have helped improve diagnostic accuracy, chronic disease management, administrative efficiency, and the expansion of healthcare access.

“The year 2025 marks an important milestone for Medix in Indonesia. We launched the Medix app, fully available in Bahasa Indonesia, to help people manage their health in a personalized and comprehensive way,” said Sigal.

Sigal emphasized that AI is not intended to replace healthcare professionals but to strengthen clinical decision-making. Medix leverages AI and data analytics combined with a human touch, including large language model-based clinical decision support, to minimize errors in diagnosis and treatment recommendations. “Several studies show that healthcare professionals supported by AI make fewer mistakes, both in diagnosis and therapy,” she added.

From Radiology to Chronic Disease Management

Medix has integrated AI across multiple service lines, from AI-powered radiology and pathology, genetic data analysis, medical guideline validation, to global clinical trial screening. This technology acts both as a safety layer and an enabler for healthcare professionals.

According to Jonathan Sternberg, transparency and service quality are key to healthcare transformation. “AI and data driven solutions enable people to manage their health more personally, transparently, and sustainably, from prevention to selecting the right services," he said.

Sternberg also highlighted the lingering lack of trust in domestic healthcare, which drives some patients to seek treatment abroad at higher costs. “One of our missions is to support local healthcare services and reduce the need for overseas treatment,” he added.

Since entering Indonesia in 2019, Medix has recorded significant achievements. About 20.3% of members avoided unnecessary major medical costs and procedures, while 51% received more accurate and personalized care plans. Medix also contributed to the diagnostic process in 21.7% of medical cases.

In cancer care, Medix reported positive outcomes in 37% of cases. In preventive services, 54.1% of unnecessary screenings were avoided, and 27.5% of patients were identified as having moderate to high risk of metabolic syndrome, allowing for early intervention. In chronic disease management, 92% of cases showed improvement in health indicators within six months.

“Indonesia will remain a priority market for us. We are committed to supporting a more inclusive, sustainable, and accessible healthcare system for all,” concluded Sigal.

Conclusion

AI and digitalization are reshaping Indonesia’s healthcare landscape, enhancing diagnostic accuracy, preventive care, and chronic disease management. Medix’s integration of AI-driven solutions demonstrates that technology, combined with human expertise, can make healthcare more accessible, efficient, and personalized. As Indonesia continues to face challenges in healthcare access and rising medical costs, innovative approaches like Medix’s offer a pathway toward a more inclusive and sustainable system.
