Jakarta, INTI – Technology continues to advance at a rapid pace, showing no signs of slowing down. Designed to simplify human life, technology makes work more efficient and effective with minimal effort.
Today, technology is no longer limited to information and communication sectors, such as messaging, but has expanded into various other industries. In business, technology has been adopted to improve operational efficiency
The adoption of technology in the manufacturing sector has significantly changed Indonesia's industrial landscape. Manufacturing companies report major benefits from technology adoption, including a 70% increase in productivity, 67.5% improvement in energy efficiency, 65% increase in customers, and 64% enhancement in product quality.
These technological advancements have had a significant positive impact, from transportation and communication progress to the way humans work. Below are three emerging technologies with high prospects for Indonesia in the coming decade:
1. Mind-Reading Internet Ads
When we are scrolling on our phone and suddenly an ad appears that matches something we were just thinking, this phenomenon is made possible by Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs).
BCIs enable direct communication between the human brain and computers, allowing for such targeted advertisements based on thought patterns.
Globally, the BCI sector is projected to grow from around USD 2.44 billion in 2024 to a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.15% from 2025 to 2030.
In Indonesia, BCI and neural monitoring technologies are still in the early stages, but the market potential is enormous. Factors such as rapid technological growth and the booming digital economy support the likelihood of innovative technologies taking root.
According to a report from Google, Temasek, and Bain & Company, Indonesia’s digital economy is expected to reach USD 124 billion by 2025, making it one of Southeast Asia’s largest markets.
This development positions Indonesia as one of the largest digital hubs in Southeast Asia, creating vast opportunities for new technologies, including neural monitoring.
Furthermore, the digital advertising industry in Indonesia is experiencing significant growth. Platforms such as Google, Facebook, and TikTok have become central marketing channels, with businesses increasingly utilizing user data to target audiences with tailored advertisements.
Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) have the potential to further transform this landscape by enabling advertisers to reach consumers with even greater accuracy, based on preferences and thoughts that have not yet been verbally expressed.
However, despite the enormous potential, there are significant concerns regarding privacy and ethics. With BCIs potentially accessing brain data, there are risks of sensitive information falling into the wrong hands or being misused by companies for market manipulation.
2. Deepfake Technology Crossing into Reality
With rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI), we now face extraordinary developments, such as deepfake technology. This technology can create highly realistic videos or audio, mimicking people’s faces, voices, or actions.
Deepfake opens new opportunities in entertainment, marketing, and education, allowing for more interactive digital content. The global deepfake market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 41.3% from 2021 to 2028, with a projected value of USD 5.2 billion by 2028.
In Indonesia, the adoption of deepfake technology is growing, especially in the entertainment sector. With increased digital content consumption through streaming services and social media, deepfake technology offers opportunities to create engaging characters or revive legendary celebrities in advertisements and films.
However, there are also significant risks. Deepfake poses a serious threat to cybersecurity and digital fraud. Indonesia, with its large internet user base, faces high risks regarding the spread of manipulated content, which could damage the reputation of individuals, companies, or even the nation.
Fortunately, companies are developing solutions to detect and prevent deepfake abuse, such as machine learning algorithms designed to analyze video and images.
3. Smart Homes with Surveillance Capabilities
With rapid growth in the digital economy and the evolving trend toward modern living, Indonesia is witnessing an increasing interest in smart home technologies.
Smart homes refer to the use of internet-connected devices to manage and automate various household aspects such as lighting, security, and temperature control.
With the growing number of internet users and the expansion of digital infrastructure, the smart home market in Indonesia is poised for significant growth over the next decade.
Globally, the smart home market is expected to continue growing rapidly, with the market value projected to exceed USD 78 billion by 2025. The main drivers of this market include the adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, advancements in AI, and the increasing demand for higher energy efficiency.
In Indonesia, the smart home sector is still in its early stages but holds great potential for development. As more consumers seek convenience, comfort, and energy efficiency, the smart home market is expected to grow.
Popular devices in Indonesia include smart lighting, thermostats, speakers, and security systems connected to mobile apps.
The smart home sector is also supported by global companies such as Google, Amazon, and Xiaomi entering the Indonesian market, offering products tailored for local consumers. Local companies are also beginning to explore affordable solutions.
As technology continues to shape industries worldwide, Indonesia is in a prime position to harness these innovations. The country’s growing digital economy, increasing tech-savvy population, and expanding infrastructure create a fertile ground for technologies like BCIs, deepfake, and smart homes.
With the right strategies, Indonesia can lead the way in adopting and benefiting from these cutting-edge technologies in the next decade.
