Jakarta, INTI – YouTube has begun testing artificial intelligence (AI) technology in the United States to identify users under the age of 18. This initiative is part of the platform’s broader efforts to protect younger audiences.
Age Estimation Model to Enhance Safety
The new “age estimation” model can assess a user’s age even if the date of birth listed on their account is inaccurate. If the AI detects an underage user, YouTube will automatically activate protective measures, such as showing non-personalized ads, enabling “digital wellbeing” features (break and bedtime reminders), limiting recommendations for sensitive content, and blocking age-restricted videos.
Verification Process for Misidentified Users
Users who believe they have been incorrectly flagged can verify their age through an ID card, a selfie, or a credit card. James Beser, Senior Director of Product Management for YouTube’s teen products, stated that this technology aims to ensure an age-appropriate experience and protection, regardless of the account’s stated information.
Proven in Other Countries
YouTube claims that similar methods have been successfully implemented in several countries with satisfactory results. The platform will initially test this AI technology with select users in the US, with plans for a wider rollout in the coming months.
Part of Broader Efforts for Child Safety
This step is designed to prevent children from accessing harmful content on the platform. The system determines whether a user is an adult or underage based on their activity, independent of the birth date provided during registration. If the tool identifies a user as underage, YouTube will automatically apply its existing teen safety measures to their account, including restrictions on sensitive content such as violent or sexually suggestive videos.
Adult users mistakenly identified as underage can appeal by submitting an ID, credit card, or selfie to verify their age.
Conclusion
Through this AI-powered age verification, YouTube strengthens its commitment to creating a safer environment for young audiences, while raising discussions about the balance between safety and user privacy.
