Jakarta, INTI – Amid the rapid global development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the government stresses that Indonesia must not merely become a market for foreign products. This message was delivered by the Head of the Human Resources Development Agency (BPSDM) at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi), Bonifasius Wahyu Pudjianto, during the Graduation of Laskar AI 2025 event in Central Jakarta on Thursday 14, August , 2025.
National AI Must Be Based on Local Data
Bonifasius emphasized that technological sovereignty is essential to ensure AI systems in Indonesia reflect national values. He stated that while devices and technology may come from abroad, the data used must be sourced and managed domestically.
“We should not merely be a market for foreign solutions. We must have AI sovereignty. Machines may come, but the ecosystem and data must come from us,” he said.
He warned that relying solely on foreign data could result in bias in AI outcomes. Therefore, the government is even considering procuring a dedicated Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to strengthen national AI resilience.
Ethics, Pancasila Values, and Culture
According to Bonifasius, developing AI based on local data enables systems that uphold strong ethics and embody Pancasila values as well as Indonesian culture.
“With our own data, we can ensure that AI reflects the values of this nation,” he noted.
He also encouraged digital talents not only to become users but also producers and intellectual property (IP) owners of the AI technology they develop.
Support for Digital Talent and the National AI Roadmap
Kemkomdigi is currently conducting a public consultation on the national AI utilization roadmap. Bonifasius invited all stakeholders to provide input so that the plan truly meets the needs of various sectors in Indonesia.
“Sectoral needs are very high ranging from agriculture, aquaculture, logistics, education, and health, to many others. All require AI implementation,” he explained.
Conclusion
Kemkomdigi’s core message is clear: Indonesia’s AI must be developed from, by, and for the nation. By leveraging local data, AI technology is expected to deliver accurate, ethical, and value-aligned solutions while strengthening national technological sovereignty.
