Jakarta, INTI - Digital platform X (formerly Twitter) has set the minimum user age in Indonesia at 16 as part of its compliance with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic System Operations for Child Protection (PP TUNAS).
The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs stated that this move represents a concrete step by a global platform to meet national regulatory obligations while strengthening child protection in the digital space.
Government Welcome X’s Compliance with Child Protection Regulation
Director General of Digital Space Supervision, Alexander Sabar, expressed the government’s appreciation for X’s decision.
“We appreciate the concrete action taken by X as a demonstration of regulatory compliance and its commitment to ensuring child protection in the digital environment,” he said in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
In an official letter dated March 17, 2026, X affirmed its commitment to implementing PP TUNAS provisions, which specifically regulate high-risk online and social networking services, restricting access to users aged 16 and above.
Alexander also noted that X has published this policy update on its Indonesia-specific Help Center page.
Enforcement Measures to Begin with Account Verification and Deactivation
Furthermore, starting March 27, 2026, X will begin executing its action plan to identify and deactivate accounts that do not meet the minimum age requirement.
“The Ministry will conduct periodic monitoring of this process to ensure full compliance with PP TUNAS regulations,” he emphasized.
The Ministry also urged other Electronic System Operators (PSEs) that have received official notices from the Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs to respond promptly and take concrete actions similar to those implemented by X.
“Active and timely compliance from all PSEs is crucial in creating a safe digital ecosystem for children,” Alexander added.
The Ministry is now awaiting other platforms to demonstrate their commitment to complying with Indonesian law.
Conclusion
The adjustment of the minimum age requirement by X marks a significant step in aligning global digital platforms with Indonesia’s regulatory framework. As enforcement begins, the government’s focus now shifts to ensuring consistent compliance across all digital service providers, reinforcing a safer and more accountable digital ecosystem for children nationwide.
