10 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Artificial intelligence (AI) is evolving rapidly and is being widely adopted by global tech companies to simplify human activities. However, behind this advancement lies growing concern over potential misuse of personal data resulting from the widespread use of AI.

Responding to these concerns, leaders of BRICS, a coalition of emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and new members like Indonesia, called for the protection of personal data in AI applications. The call was made during the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6–7, 2025.

Advocating Fair Use and Regulation of AI

In a draft declaration obtained by Reuters, BRICS leaders emphasized the importance of avoiding excessive data collection and ensuring fair compensation mechanisms in AI development. This issue is becoming critical as major tech companies from developed countries continue to reject calls to pay for copyrighted materials used to train AI models.

Indonesia Voices Support for BRICS and Responsible AI

President Prabowo Subianto attended the summit, representing Indonesia as a full member of BRICS since January 2025. In a plenary session with other global leaders, he highlighted the importance of world peace, international security, and the need for AI development that is fair and responsible.

Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, who accompanied the President, stated that the main outcomes of the summit were outlined in the Leaders’ Declaration, which contains four key pillars of cooperation among BRICS member states.

Four Key Points from the BRICS Leaders’ Declaration

Airlangga explained that the first point focuses on strengthening multilateralism and reforming global governance. The second point stresses the importance of global peace, as well as economic, trade, and financial cooperation, which are crucial for Indonesia in expanding market access and enhancing economic resilience.

The third point addresses the commitment to climate change and sustainable development that is fair and inclusive, in line with energy transition principles for developing nations. The fourth emphasizes human, social, and cultural development, which Indonesia sees as vital to creating equitable social transformation across member countries.

Indonesia Actively Participates in BRICS Since Early 2025

Since joining BRICS, Indonesia has actively participated in more than 165 BRICS meetings under Brazil’s chairmanship, including 20 ministerial-level meetings. This involvement reflects Indonesia’s determination to be part of global solutions, especially in facing technological challenges and addressing development disparities.

Conclusion:

The 2025 BRICS Summit in Brazil marked a pivotal moment as world leaders called for stronger personal data protection in the development of AI, which is expanding rapidly. Indonesia, attending the summit for the first time as a full BRICS member, affirmed its commitment to strengthening multilateralism, sustainable development, and promoting fair and responsible AI.
