Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia's national sports development is entering a new era as the National Sports Committee of Indonesia (KONI) has designated Universitas Negeri Surabaya as the pilot project for Sport Intelligence Indonesia. More than the appointment of a university, the initiative represents a strategic commitment to transforming Indonesia's sports development system through science, data analytics, and artificial intelligence (AI).
The milestone was announced during the Sport Intelligence Book Discussion held on July 7, 2026, at the Auditorium of UNESA's Faculty of Sports and Health Sciences in Surabaya. The event marked the beginning of a national movement that places scientific research and technological innovation at the center of Indonesia's pursuit of international sporting excellence.
The decision reflects a significant shift in the country's sports development strategy. While athletic success has traditionally relied on talent, experience, and rigorous training, Indonesia is now embracing a data-driven approach in which coaching decisions, training programs, and competition strategies are supported by scientific analysis and AI-powered insights.

Under the theme "From Knowledge to Performance, From Innovation to World Achievement," the collaboration between KONI and UNESA seeks to integrate sport science, big data, biomechanics, exercise physiology, sports psychology, nutrition, performance analytics, and artificial intelligence into the country's athlete development system.
UNESA Rector Nurhasan described the appointment as a major responsibility for Indonesia's sports community.
"We are committed to building world-class sporting achievements through Sport Intelligence as a national sports transformation movement. Future sporting success will be driven not only by talent and hard work, but also by science, technology, innovation, data, and artificial intelligence," he said.

Indonesia's Sport Intelligence initiative follows the path established by several countries that have successfully integrated advanced technologies into their high-performance sports systems.
Australia, through the Australian Institute of Sport, has long utilized data analytics, biomechanical sensors, physiological monitoring, and AI to optimize athlete performance and reduce injury risks. This evidence-based approach has helped the country remain among the world's leading sporting nations.
The United Kingdom strengthened its international competitiveness through substantial investment in sports research and technology, particularly around the 2012 Summer Olympics, where performance analytics and sports engineering played a crucial role in improving elite athlete performance.
Japan has combined sport science with robotics, sensor technologies, and continuous improvement practices to enhance training efficiency, minimize injuries, and support data-informed coaching, particularly during preparations for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
China has also built a highly integrated sports development system that leverages artificial intelligence, computer vision, big data, and motion analysis across every stage of athlete development, from early talent identification to elite performance evaluation and competition strategy.
