Three Geothermal Areas in Garut Set to Become New Sources of Electricity

9 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - The Garut Regency Government continues to encourage geothermal energy development as part of its efforts to strengthen the use of renewable energy in the region. Garut Regent Abdusy Syakur Amin stated that three areas in Garut are considered highly potential for development as environmentally friendly power generation sources.

“The three locations currently identified as having strong potential are Cisurupan, Kamojang, and Karaha,” Syakur said on Thursday, May 14, 2026.

Garut Expands Geothermal Energy Development

According to him, Garut Regency possesses abundant geothermal resources that can support national energy needs while also contributing economic benefits to the region through revenue-sharing funds.

He explained that geothermal development in the Kamojang area could increase electricity capacity by up to 55 megawatts (MW) through the construction of new wells. Meanwhile, the Karaha area, which is already operational, still holds an additional potential capacity of around 20 MW.

“Garut’s geothermal potential is one of the region’s strategic resources that can continue to be developed,” he stated.

Long-Term Plans for Cisurupan Geothermal Project

In addition to Kamojang and Karaha, the government is also preparing a long-term plan for geothermal development in the Papandayan area of Cisurupan District. However, the project is still in the preliminary study phase conducted by the central government.

Syakur said the initial assessment process would require considerable time before moving into further development stages.

“The central government has assigned a preliminary study regarding geothermal potential in Cisurupan. Since it is still at an early stage, the process will naturally take quite a long time,” he explained.

He added that the Garut administration has actively coordinated with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia and the National Energy Council of Indonesia to strengthen collaboration in renewable energy development across the region.

The initiative is considered important as part of a broader strategy to address future energy challenges while accelerating the transition toward cleaner and more efficient energy sources.

“Energy is a primary necessity, and geothermal power is one of the relatively affordable and environmentally friendly energy sources,” Syakur concluded.

Conclusion

Garut continues to strengthen its renewable energy ambitions through geothermal development in Cisurupan, Kamojang, and Karaha. The initiative is expected to support national energy needs, accelerate the transition toward cleaner energy, and create long-term economic benefits for the region.
