Jakarta, INTI - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) welcomes Singapore's interest in building solar power project in the Morowali industrial area, Central Sulawesi. The proposal is considered to be able to meet the electricity needs of Indonesia’s growing mineral processing center.
ESDM’s Director General of New, Renewable Energy, and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Eniya Listiani Dewi, believes the proposed PLTS development could help address electricity supply constraints in Sulawesi. She believes the Morowali region currently requires significant additional power, along with the growing downstream industrial activity in the region.
"That's good. Sulawesi has an electricity shortage. North Sulawesi and Gorontalo area (Sulutgo) have a surplus. So, that's why downstream transmission is necessary. Downstream transmission is essential, as Morowali and other areas have many industries, and there's shortage of electricity there," said Eniya.
A Follow-Up to MoU Between Indonesia and Singapore
The investment plan is a follow-up to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Indonesia and Singapore regarding the development of a Sustainable Industrial Zone (SIZ). The government is currently conducting in-depth studies to determine locations to be designated as National Strategic Projects (PSN).
Therefore, the government is committed to continuing to facilitate every investment in new and renewable energy to achieve the national energy mix target. The presence of a large-scale solar power plant in Morowali is expected to not only strengthen regional energy security but also increase the competitiveness of Indonesian downstream products in the global market through the use of clean energy.
Conclusion
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has welcomed Singapore's interest in building a solar power plant in the Morowali industrial area, Central Sulawesi. Eniya Listiani Dewi stated that there is a shortage of electricity supply in the Morowali area, necessitating the urgent need for additional power plants and strengthening the transmission network. The investment plan follows up on the Indonesia-Singapore MoU regarding the development of a Sustainable Industrial Zone (SIZ).
