The Legok Nangka Waste-to-Electricity Plant Facility will Process 2,131 Tons of Waste into Electricity

Jakarta, INTI - The construction of the waste-to-electricity (WTE) plant facility in Legok Nangka, Bandung, has officially started. The construction’s groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Deputy Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Yuliot on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.

The 2,131 tons of daily accumulated waste from six regencies and cities in West Java will no longer end up in the landfills. Through this WTE facility, the waste will be processed into electricity with a capacity of 40.79 megawatts.

In his remarks, Yuliot stated that comprehensive urban waste management is targeted to be resolved by 2029 through an upstream-downstream scheme and the conversion of waste into an energy source.

With this waste management facility, the government also aims to prevent the problem of urban waste from protracting, considering that unmanaged piles have the potential to cause environmental problems such as landslides and fires.

"Today's groundbreaking not only marks the beginning of infrastructure construction, but also symbolizes a shared commitment to realizing a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable future for Indonesia," he continued.

Benefits for the Environment and Community

Yuliot hopes the Legok Nangka WTE facility can become a model for developing waste-to-energy projects that can be implemented in various regions.

"With significant generating capacity and investment support, this project is expected to provide tangible benefits through reducing waste volume, providing clean energy, creating jobs, increasing regional economic activity, reducing emissions, and improving environmental quality and public health," he said.

Meanwhile, West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi stated that the Legok Nangka WTE facility, targeted for operation in 2029, will address the waste problem in Bandung, provide electricity for the community and industry, and create a cleaner environment.

This Rp7.2 trillion (approximately USD 400 million) WTE project is designed to have a capacity of 40.79 megawatts. During its 41-month construction period, the project is expected to employ 1,565 workers and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 311,874 tons of CO2 equivalent.

Conclusion 

Construction of the Legok Nangka WTE facility in Bandung has officially begun. The facility will process 2,131 tons of waste per day from six regencies/cities in West Java into electricity with a capacity of 40.79 megawatts. This USD 400 million (approximately IDR 7.2 trillion) project is part of the government's efforts to resolve the urban waste problem by 2029 through the waste-to-energy concept.
