The Government of Indonesia Strengthens AI Governance to Protect Data and Drive the Digital Economy

1 week ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - The government emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) must be properly mitigated through strong governance frameworks to ensure the protection of public data and digital security.

Nezar Patria stated that AI governance is increasingly critical as the technology becomes more advanced, making it difficult to distinguish between AI-generated outputs and real-world conditions.

“We refer to this as synthetic reality. This is the biggest challenge we will face in the future in terms of mitigation,” he said.

AI Challenges and Control

The government views these challenges as issues that must be addressed without hindering the positive use of AI technology.

Efforts are being made to ensure that the benefits of AI can be fully optimized while minimizing its negative impacts.

“Artificial intelligence must be positioned as an empowerment tool, not a substitute for human roles,” he added.

Role of State Owned Enterprises and National Regulation

AI is considered to have significant potential as a driver of the national digital economy, with strong growth opportunities in the coming years.

The government is encouraging State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) to take a leading role in implementing responsible AI adoption in Indonesia.

“The government views the development of AI and large-scale data utilization as a key catalyst for digital economic growth,” he said.

The government is currently preparing various regulatory instruments related to AI, including a national AI roadmap and AI governance ethics guidelines.

“We hope the Presidential Regulation on the National AI Roadmap and AI Governance Ethics can be finalized soon,” he concluded.

Conclusion

The government is strengthening artificial intelligence governance to ensure that rapid AI development remains safe, ethical, and beneficial for society. By prioritizing data protection, responsible use, and national regulatory frameworks, including the upcoming AI roadmap and ethics guidelines, Indonesia aims to position AI as an empowerment tool that supports sustainable digital economic growth.
