Jakarta, INTI – Starting Monday, July 21, 2025, Telkomsel will expand its 5G network coverage to the city of Bandung. This move continues the state-owned mobile operator’s 5G rollout across major cities throughout the year. The information was confirmed by Telkomsel’s Vice President of Corporate Communications & CSR, Saki H. Bramono, during a public event in South Jakarta on Tuesday evening (July 15, 2025). The initial phase of the expansion will focus on urban areas in Bandung, with attention given to infrastructure and market readiness.
Bandung Chosen as the Next Strategic Area
Bandung’s selection was not without reason. As a city experiencing strong growth in digital technology users, In the city of Bandung, the community has reached a relatively mature level of device adoption to support 5G connectivity. In addition, the adoption rate of 5G-compatible devices in the region continues to increase.
“Next Monday, we’ll be launching the 5G expansion in Bandung,” said Saki. However, Telkomsel stressed that it remains selective when choosing new expansion locations, guided by a range of technical and market-based parameters.
Expansion Follows Batam and Makassar Rollouts
Prior to Bandung, Telkomsel had launched 5G services in Batam and Makassar on June 2025. A month earlier, in May, 5G coverage was extended to coastal areas in Makassar, including 11 surrounding frontier islands.
Telkomsel emphasized that such expansions are never done randomly. “We assess whether the market is ready or not. We don’t want to invest in areas where 5G device penetration is still low, it would be ineffective,” Saki explained.
Targeting the Digital Divide
The expansion is also part of Telkomsel’s broader commitment to narrowing the digital divide. This includes improving access in regions that still face connectivity gaps or lack high-speed networks.
In addition to major cities, Telkomsel aims to extend services to strategically important areas that have the potential to drive growth in the digital economy, education, and tech-based public services.
Conclusion
Telkomsel’s 5G network rollout in Bandung is part of a larger strategy to expand connectivity and support national digital transformation. With a gradual and data-driven approach, Telkomsel seeks to ensure that every expansion meets real needs and delivers meaningful impact to communities.
