Surabaya Students Transform Paper Waste into Innovative Painting Kit

7 months ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI – The growing problem of paper waste from households, offices, and print shops poses a significant challenge to environmental sustainability. However, a group of students in Surabaya has showcased a creative solution by turning this waste into useful products. During the 88th Graduation Ceremony at Petra Christian University (PCU) on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, the graduates displayed their innovations, including a painting kit made from paper waste. This initiative not only reduces the environmental impact of waste but also provides a creative outlet that promotes mental relaxation. Evelyn Widiana, a Visual Communication Design graduate-to-be, pioneered the project with her creation, “Paper Pulse.” The product combines creativity, design skills, and environmental awareness into a functional and aesthetically pleasing package.

From Paper Waste to Artistic Creation

Evelyn explained that used paper from magazines, brochures, food packaging, and newspapers has great potential to be repurposed. Instead of being discarded, these papers are transformed into canvases and supporting materials for painting. “Everyday paper usage is extremely common. If not properly managed, this waste can have harmful effects on the environment,” she said.

Paper Pulse: A Symbol of Creativity and Calm

Evelyn’s textured painting kit is named Paper Pulse. Each kit includes canvases measuring 15x15 cm or 15x20 cm, acrylic paints, glue, tweezers, popsicle sticks, instruction sheets, and recycled paper transformed into painting media. The name “Paper Pulse” combines paper, highlighting the main material, and pulse, symbolizing a calming heartbeat, emphasizing the relaxation aspect of artistic activity.

Art as a Medium for Social Message

Evelyn stressed that design is not merely about aesthetics but also serves as a medium to convey social messages. Through Paper Pulse, she aims to demonstrate that design can offer both functional and emotional benefits while educating the public on the importance of creative waste management. “Mind holds power,” Evelyn said, affirming the philosophy behind her creation.

Conclusion

The innovation by Surabaya students with Paper Pulse proves that waste can be transformed into valuable products. In addition to supporting environmental sustainability, this creation provides opportunities for people to channel their creativity while reducing the impact of paper waste. This initiative serves as a tangible example of how design, innovation, and environmental awareness can harmoniously come together.
