Jakarta, INTI – In the ever-evolving era of wearable technology, smart rings are now more than just health trackers. An American startup, RAW Ring, introduced a device that claims to prevent infidelity - and caught the attention of many.
From Sleep Tracker to Emotion Tracker
Usually, smart rings are used to monitor heart rate, sleep quality, and physical fitness. However, RAW Ring takes a different approach. Through biological sensor technology and artificial intelligence (AI), this ring is predicted to be able to detect:
- Changes in heart rate
- The user's body temperature
- Social interactions around the user
RAW Ring CEO Marina Anderson explains that the ring is not just a tool, but a symbol for building trust in relationships.
“We want to help couples explore their feelings for each other on a deeper level,” she told The Verge. “Almost 50% of marriages end in divorce. We wanted to make a symbol of trust, not a snooping tool.”
More than Just a Device: The Philosophy Behind It
RAW Ring is also integrated with a dating app called RAW, which opposes the culture of “catfishing” and “ghosting”. On the app, users are required to upload selfies without filters or edits, emphasizing authenticity and transparency from the start.
The ring's technological claims include terms such as “biosensor fusion” and “AI-based detection” that are said to be able to read tone of voice and emotional expressions. To date, however, there are no fully functional prototypes available to the public.
Between Ethics and Technology
Ethical issues are raised. Is it a trust-boosting tool or a disguised form of control? Anderson denies that the product is meant to be a tracker:
“We don't want the ring to be used to check fidelity or spy on couples.” “You can turn it off at any time, and the data will stop being shared,” he explains.
However, details on how the RAW Ring prevents misuse or maintains user privacy have not been detailed.
Conclusion
Regardless of the pros and cons, RAW Ring shows how technological innovation is increasingly touching the emotional and psychological aspects of people's lives not only in terms of productivity, but also personal relationships.
Is it a step forward in building trust? Or is it simply a product that capitalizes on fear in relationships? The answer is still open.
