Singapore Announces Evaluation Plan regarding Potential Utilization of Nuclear Energy

5 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - The Singaporean government has announced plans to evaluate the potential use of nuclear energy to diversify its energy sources. This is intended to support the country’s net-zero emissions target while adhering to safety standards set by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

According to VN Express, Singapore has scheduled a formal assessment, supported by international experts, starting in 2027. This review will be the first phase of the Integrated Nuclear Infrastructure Review (INIR) mission to validate the country's progress and readiness in developing advanced nuclear technology.

The evaluation process will utilize the globally recognized Milestones Approach framework to ensure nuclear capacity development remains on track with the established roadmap. However, the Singaporean government emphasized that no final decision has been made yet on the commercial adoption or deployment of nuclear energy in the country.

Singapore will Focus on Regulation and Safety System

Singapore continues to monitor developments in nuclear technology globally while collaborating with various international partners. The primary focus of this collaboration is to strengthen expertise in nuclear regulations and safety systems before the policy is fully implemented.

Any decision regarding the future use of nuclear power will carefully consider various crucial aspects, such as safety, reliability, and affordability. Furthermore, environmental sustainability is a key consideration, tailored to Singapore's unique national context as a city-state.

This new energy assessment comes amid Singapore's position as the richest country in Asia according to the Prosperity Index 2026. With a stable economy, Singapore continues to explore all clean energy options to achieve its carbon neutrality target and maintain long-term energy security.

Conclusion

Singapore will conduct a formal evaluation starting in 2027 to assess its readiness and potential for nuclear energy utilization. It is a part of its energy diversification efforts to achieve its net-zero emissions target. The assessment, supported by international experts, is the initial phase of the INIR mission and uses the Milestones Approach framework to ensure nuclear capacity development meets global standards. The government emphasized that no decision has been made on commercial nuclear energy adoption and remains focused on monitoring technological developments and strengthening expertise in nuclear regulation and safety.
