QRIS Drives Ambon’s MSMEs into the Digital Economy

4 hours ago | FINANCIAL TECHNOLOGY

Jakarta, INTI - The use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) is expanding among micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Ambon as the local government and Bank Indonesia’s Maluku Representative Office step up efforts to accelerate digital transaction adoption.

QRIS payments are increasingly being used at food stalls, coffee shops, and culinary vendors across public spaces in Ambon, providing an alternative to cash transactions.

The shift in payment habits is being leveraged by the Ambon City Government as an opportunity to help MSMEs take a deeper step into the modern digital economy.

In collaboration with Bank Indonesia’s Maluku Representative Office, the local government is providing education and assistance to small business owners to encourage wider adoption of digital payments.

Digitalization Efforts Strengthened Since March 2026

Efforts to accelerate MSME digitalization in Ambon have gained momentum since March 2026 through consumer protection education and assistance for merchants seeking to adopt QRIS.

The program targets public spaces such as Wainitu Public Open Space, Air Salobar, and the Amahusu area.

The assistance is designed to ensure that MSME operators not only have access to spaces to conduct business but are also equipped to keep pace with the evolution of digital payment systems.

Cash Transactions Gradually Embrace Digital Payments

QRIS enables consumers to complete payments by scanning a code with their mobile phones, eliminating the need to carry cash or calculate change.

The growing adoption of digital payments is gradually complementing face-to-face transactions, which have long been an integral part of commercial activities in Ambon.

The Ambon City Government views the development of a technology-driven business ecosystem as an important step in helping MSMEs adapt to the modernization of the economy.

Conclusion

The growing adoption of QRIS is helping Ambon’s MSMEs transition from cash-based transactions toward a more connected digital economy. With continued support from the local government and Bank Indonesia, digital payments can strengthen business accessibility, efficiency, and competitiveness for small enterprises across the city.
