Jakarta, INTI - PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS), an integrated steel producer, announced the successful installation and operations of its first large-scale solar power facility in collaboration with iForte Energi. This marks a transformative milestone in the company's commitment to sustainable steel production and environmental management.
The 55,000 square meter solar installation with a total generating capacity of 6.5 megawatt peak (MWp) is one of the most significant renewable energy investments in Indonesia's steel manufacturing sector.
The facility will supply clean electricity to manufacturing operations, including the steel smelter, rolling mill, warehouse, and administrative facilities. It substantially reduces the company's greenhouse gas emissions and supports Indonesia's transition to a green industry.
GYS’s solar power initiative is part of a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap designed to position the company as an industry leader in sustainable manufacturing. The company has implemented various technologies and circular economy practices to minimize its environmental impact, including:
- Electrical Arc Furnace (EAF) technology: GYS uses environmentally friendly EAF technology that significantly reduces carbon emissions compared to traditional blast furnaces
- Circular economy integration: The company is building a material recovery ecosystem with local communities and industry partners to ensure steel scrap is recycled into high-quality products to minimize waste
- Sustainable modernization: Sustainable investment in the revamping and modernization of Beam Plant 1 (BP1) demonstrates a commitment to energy-efficient operations and technological advancement
This installation is also a result of PT Garuda Yamato Steel's strategic partnership with PLN Indonesia that plays a crucial role in realizing this initiative. This collaboration directly contributes to the national net-zero emission target and positions GYS as a key partner in the national energy transition.
"The operation of our solar energy system is a significant milestone for PT Garuda Yamato Steel and our vision for the future of steel manufacturing in Indonesia," said Tony Taniwan, President Director of PT Garuda Yamato Steel, in a statement on Tuesday, April 6, 2026.
He also added that the facility is the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable industrial practices. With renewable energy and reduced emissions, the company creates long-term value for customers, partners, employees, and the community.
PT Garuda Yamato Steel remains committed in exploring additional renewable energy solutions and sustainability initiatives, including:
- Expanding solar panel installations on the roofs of remaining buildings and available land
- Implementing advanced energy efficiency technologies across company operations
- Developing low-carbon steel products to meet market demand
- Increasing collaboration with stakeholders to promote circular economy principles
Conclusion
PT Garuda Yamato Steel (GYS) officially operates a 6.5 MWp capacity solar power facility as part of its decarbonization strategy to support sustainable steel production. The installation supplies clean electricity to all manufacturing operations, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and complements the company's efforts through the use of EAF technology, circular economy integration, and facility modernization. Collaboration with PLN also strengthens the company’s contribution to the net-zero emission target. GYS is committed to expanding the use of renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and developing low-emission steel products.
