Prabowo to Issue Two AI Regulations This Year

3 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid stated that regulations governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in Indonesia are among the priorities of President Subianto this year. The government is preparing two key regulations: a presidential regulation on the national AI roadmap and security guidelines for the ethical use of AI.

“It is very important for these regulations to be enacted, and Indonesia has prepared them in 2025. God willing, they will be a priority to be signed by the President in 2026,” Meutya said during a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday, January 26, 2026.

Meutya added that once the presidential regulation is signed byPrabowo, each ministry and government institution will be required to issue derivative regulations, particularly those related to AI implementation in their respective sectors. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs will act as the orchestrator of AI regulation implementation, while technical aspects will be handled by the relevant ministries and agencies.

“We leave it to each respective ministry and institution, as they certainly have a better understanding and deeper knowledge of artificial intelligence regulations within their own sectors,” she said.

Special AI Labels

Meutya revealed that the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has also prepared plans to issue derivative regulations once the AI presidential regulation is signed. These will relate to the introduction of special labels for AI-generated content.

“So once the presidential regulation is signed, the first ministerial regulation to be issued as its derivative will require platforms to carry out labeling or watermarking to indicate that the content is AI-generated,” Meutya said during a working meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR) on Monday January 26, 2026.

This indicates that Indonesia will take a similar approach to South Korea, which introduced its AI Basic Act on Thursday, January 22, 2026, local time.

South Korea’s AI Basic Act, introduced by the government, will take effect earlier than the European Union’s AI Act, which is being implemented in stages through 2027. This positions the law as the world’s first comprehensive regulation governing artificial intelligence.

Under the regulation, companies that fail to provide AI labels on content produced using artificial intelligence platforms may face fines of up to 30 million won, or approximately Rp 347 million (based on an exchange rate of Rp 11.58 per won).

The South Korean AI law also mandates specific labeling for generative AI content, referring to AI systems capable of creating new content such as text, images, and videos.

Conclusion

South Korea’s AI Basic Act sets a global benchmark for AI governance by taking effect ahead of the European Union’s AI framework. With clear requirements for AI content labeling, particularly for generative AI, the regulation underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and user protection in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape.
