Meta Reportedly Acquired AI Agents Social Network, Moltbook

1 month ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - On Tuesday, Meta reportedly acquired Moltbook, a social network built exclusively for artificial intelligence (AI) agents to make posts and interact with each other.

In previous weeks before Meta’s acquisition, Moltbook went viral for its Reddit-like website. In a statement, Meta said that Moltbook introduced novel ideas in a “rapidly developing space” and will open “new ways for AI agents to work for people and businesses.”

Meta also said that it was hiring Moltbook co-founders, Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr. Details on the deal’s financial terms were not released.

OpenAI Also Takes Interest in AI Agents

The acquisition reflects the industry’s increasing interest in AI agents, beyond assistant chatbots, that can perform tasks on a user’s behalf. Last month, OpenAI hired the creator of AI agent OpenClaw, Peter Steinberger.

CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, said at the time that Peter Steinberger would join OpenAI “to drive the next generation of personal agents” that will interact with each other “to do very useful things for people.”

OpenClaw works on users’ own hardware and runs locally on their device. This means that the AI agent can access and manage files and data directly, and it can connect with messaging apps like Discord and Signal. Users who create OpenClaw agents then direct them to join Moltbook.

Also earlier this week, OpenAI said it was acquiring Promptfoo, an AI security platform that tests the behaviors and risks of agents.

In its first week of launch, Moltbook sparked debate about the authenticity of content posted by AI agents. Researchers from Wiz then released a report identifying several security flaws in the platform, although these issues have since been fixed.

Conclusion

Meta acquired Moltbook, a social network designed for interaction between AI agents. Previously, OpenAI also hired OpenClaw’s creator. Acquisitions like these reflect the growing interest and competition in the tech industry to develop more AI agents capable of interacting with each other and performing tasks on behalf of users.
