Jakarta, INTI - Lippo Malls Indonesia (LMI) is accelerating its clean energy transition by commissioning a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system at Sun Plaza Medan, reinforcing its commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles while reducing carbon emissions across its retail portfolio.
The new installation is expected to cut annual carbon emissions by up to 729 tons of CO₂, making Sun Plaza the fifth mall in the LMI network to adopt rooftop solar energy after Lippo Mall Cikarang, Lippo Plaza Kramat Jati, Lippo Plaza Batu, and Lippo Plaza Kendari.
Throughout 2026, LMI allocated the equivalent of approximately Rp11.6 billion to develop rooftop solar systems at Sun Plaza Medan and Lippo Plaza Kendari.
The Sun Plaza solar installation is projected to generate up to 810 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity annually, supplying around 2.5% of the mall's yearly power demand while delivering energy cost savings of approximately Rp130 million per year.
Beyond reducing dependence on conventional electricity, the system is expected to lower carbon emissions by 640–729 tons of CO₂ annually, equivalent to the carbon absorption capacity of approximately 29,000–33,000 trees.
ESG Strategy Drives Sustainable Mall Operations
LMI Chief Marketing Officer Santiwati Basuki said the rooftop solar initiative forms part of the company's broader strategy to integrate ESG principles into its business operations.
"The implementation of solar panels at Sun Plaza and Lippo Plaza Kendari reflects Lippo Malls Indonesia's strong commitment to embedding ESG principles into our operations. We view sustainability not only as a corporate responsibility but also as a strategic investment that enhances operational efficiency, strengthens asset competitiveness, and builds greater trust among customers, business partners, and the wider community," she said.
In addition to Sun Plaza, LMI has completed a rooftop solar installation at Lippo Plaza Kendari, representing an investment of approximately Rp5.2 billion. Both projects are part of the company's long-term roadmap to expand renewable energy adoption across its nationwide shopping mall portfolio.
Looking ahead, LMI will continue evaluating opportunities to deploy renewable energy technologies across more properties as part of its long-term carbon reduction strategy. The Sun Plaza project also reinforces Medan's growing role in adopting sustainable building practices.
Conclusion
By expanding rooftop solar installations across its shopping mall network, Lippo Malls Indonesia is advancing its sustainability agenda while improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The initiative highlights the growing role of renewable energy in Indonesia's commercial property sector and supports the country's broader transition toward a greener economy.
