Leveraging Renewable Energy, Pertamina Supports Villages to Achieve Energy Independence

2 weeks ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Amid fluctuating global oil prices and the increasingly tangible threat of climate change, a new source of hope is emerging from rural communities across Indonesia. Villages that once faced significant hardship are now beginning to thrive, driven by the adoption of renewable energy and the implementation of appropriate technologies. Even in areas previously affected by climate-related disasters, communities are showing greater resilience and the ability to recover.

Solar Innovation Boosts Productivity and Resilience

One such example can be found in Padang Sakti Village, where the Pertamina Energy-Independent Village Program (Desa Energi Berdikari/DEB) has introduced renewable energy solutions. The initiative includes a solar power system with a capacity of 4.4 kilowatt-peak (kWp), supported by a 10 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, which is used to operate aerators and feed machines for aquaculture. As a result, this environmentally friendly energy solution has increased pond productivity by up to 40 percent and boosted residents’ income to approximately Rp6 million–Rp8 million per month.

Despite strong community enthusiasm, climate-related disasters that struck Sumatra and Aceh in 2025 severely impacted local aquaculture, destroying shrimp and fish stocks. Fortunately, the solar power system remained operational, enabling residents to rebuild and restart their livelihoods.

“After the floods, we lost everything. Thanks to Pertamina’s DEB Program, we were able to recover, restart our business, and live more independently,” said Muhrizal, a local champion in vannamei shrimp farming under the Gampong Berdikari initiative.

Scaling Impact Through Sustainability and Global Recognition

The DEB program generates an economic value of up to Rp5.5 trillion annually and reduces emissions by approximately 1.09 million tons of CO2 equivalent per year. Its significant impact has brought Pertamina global recognition. Alongside 23 global companies, including Aviva Plc, British Airways, CEMEX, General Motors, Lenovo, and Saudi Aramco, Pertamina received the SEAL Awards 2026 in the Environmental Initiatives category.

According to Muhammad Baron, the award reflects recognition of impactful environmental and sustainability initiatives that benefit communities. Pertamina has been acknowledged for delivering innovative solutions through renewable energy, helping rural communities build economic resilience and adapt to climate change.

“This international recognition is the result of collaboration among various stakeholders, including local communities, regional governments, and partners. It motivates us to continue delivering impactful innovations, especially in strengthening village resilience amid global challenges,” Baron stated.

To date, Pertamina has developed 252 DEB programs across Indonesia, with 64 percent located outside Java to ensure equitable development. Additionally, 156 DEB initiatives contribute to food production, generating 15.8 thousand tons of rice and 890.4 tons of non-rice food commodities, supporting national food security.

The renewable energy utilized in the DEB program includes solar panels, micro-hydro systems, biogas, and other clean energy sources. These initiatives not only strengthen energy security in rural areas but also drive local economic activities.

Looking ahead, Pertamina remains committed to expanding clean energy initiatives and community empowerment programs. The goal is to enable more villages to not only withstand economic fluctuations and climate challenges but also evolve into hubs of energy independence and new economic growth. This effort aligns with the government’s National Energy General Plan (RUEN) and supports the country’s long-term sustainability targets.

Pertamina also reaffirmed its commitment to accelerating the energy transition, not only as an energy provider but also as a key contributor to reducing carbon emissions in Indonesia. As a leader in energy transition, the company continues to support the national target of achieving net zero emissions by 2060, while advancing programs that directly contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These efforts are in line with Pertamina’s broader transformation, which emphasizes strong governance, public service, business sustainability, and environmental responsibility through the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles across its operations.

Conclusion

Pertamina’s renewable energy initiatives demonstrate how sustainable innovation can transform rural communities into resilient and economically independent ecosystems. By combining clean energy solutions with community empowerment, Indonesia is not only addressing climate challenges but also creating a scalable model for inclusive growth and long-term sustainability.
