Komdigi Prepares Affordable Fixed Broadband Internet: Rp 100,000 for 100Mbps

1 year ago | Internet and Telecommunication

Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government is currently formulating a strategic policy to provide fast and more affordable home internet services. One concrete step being prepared is the auction of the 1.4GHz frequency.

This frequency will be utilized to support internet access through Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) technology, aiming to deliver speeds of up to 100Mbps at more affordable prices.

This initiative is expected to significantly boost household internet penetration, particularly in underserved and remote areas, where access to reliable internet remains limited.

By prioritizing affordability and speed, the government seeks to empower communities, support digital literacy, and accelerate the nation’s digital transformation.

The 1.4GHz Frequency Auction and Its Objectives

The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) is spearheading this initiative, with the auction process for the 1.4GHz frequency projected to begin in the third week of February 2025.

According to Wayan Toni Supriyanto, Director General of Digital Infrastructure at Komdigi, this auction marks a critical step in expanding fixed broadband internet services across Indonesia.

To support this effort, Komdigi is drafting a Ministerial Regulation concerning the use of the 1.4GHz radio frequency spectrum. This regulation aims to accelerate the deployment of fixed broadband services, enhance fiber optic infrastructure, and ensure that high-speed internet becomes accessible to a broader population.

Currently, fixed broadband (FBB) penetration in Indonesia remains relatively low, with only 21.31% of households having access. Additionally, the average internet speed available is only 32.10Mbps, while high-speed 100Mbps internet packages are still considered expensive for most people.

To provide high-quality yet affordable internet access, the government plans to set the pricing for 100Mbps internet services at around Rp100,000 to Rp150,000 per month.

This initiative is expected to offer a viable solution for lower-middle-class communities with limited purchasing power who still require stable and fast internet access.

Broader Impact on Digital Economy and Society

The allocation of 80MHz of radio frequency spectrum in the 1.4GHz band is a key component of this initiative. Beyond increasing household internet adoption, this policy is expected to support the growth of Indonesia’s digital economy, online education, and technology-based services.

By improving internet accessibility, the government aims to create a more inclusive digital ecosystem that benefits all sectors of society. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of fostering innovation, enhancing productivity, and ensuring that no community is left behind in the digital era.

Aligning with Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2025

The government’s efforts are in line with Presidential Instruction Number 1 of 2025, which emphasizes budget efficiency and innovative approaches to digital transformation.

Minister of Communication and Digital (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid highlighted that efficiency does not equate to stagnation but rather presents an opportunity to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure in a more sustainable manner.

According to her, the effectiveness of programs is far more important than merely the allocated budget. She conveyed this statement during a Working Meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR), where she underscored the importance of well-planned strategies to ensure that digitalization continues to have a tangible impact on society.

"Efficiency does not mean stagnation. We are not just cutting numbers; we are designing new strategies to ensure that digitalization continues to provide direct benefits to the public," stated Meutya Hafid during a Working Meeting with Commission I of the House of Representatives (DPR).

As part of the efficiency drive, Komdigi will reprioritize programs and budgets to ensure that initiatives with a direct impact on public interests continue to run optimally. This includes exploring new partnership models, optimizing cross-sector collaboration, and enhancing the effectiveness of program implementation.

"We must find ways to keep priority programs running, even with a more innovative approach. This is not just a challenge but also an opportunity to create breakthroughs that are more effective and sustainable," Meutya Hafid concluded.

Conclusion

The government’s strategic policy to provide fast and affordable home internet services represents a significant step toward achieving digital inclusivity in Indonesia. By leveraging the 1.4GHz frequency auction, setting affordable pricing, and aligning with Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 2025, the government is laying the foundation for a more connected and digitally empowered society.

This initiative not only addresses the immediate need for better internet access but also supports long-term goals such as economic growth, educational advancement, and technological innovation. As Indonesia continues its digital transformation journey, these efforts underscore the government’s commitment to ensuring that the benefits of digitalization reach every corner of the nation.
