Komdigi Encourages Data Center Expansion into Eastern Indonesia to Reduce Concentration in the Western Region

11 hours ago | Data Center

Jakarta, INTI - Kementerian Komunikasi dan Digital (Komdigi) plans to promote more balanced development of national data centers by expanding infrastructure projects into Eastern Indonesia.

Director General of Digital Infrastructure at Komdigi, Wayan Toni Supriyanto, stated that data centers have so far remained concentrated in Western Indonesia, making a new distribution strategy necessary to ensure more equal development across the country.

“Going forward, we aim to expand not only in the western region, but also into the eastern part of Indonesia. We are currently preparing a master plan and roadmap for data center development,” he said during the IndoTelko Forum in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

Wayan explained that equal distribution of data centers is essential to strengthening Indonesia’s national digital ecosystem, especially as demand for computing power and data processing continues to rise alongside rapid technological advancements such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).

He emphasized that data centers are no longer merely data storage facilities, but have evolved into the backbone of the digital economy and a critical foundation for data-driven technologies.

“Data centers have become part of Indonesia’s strategic digital assets. Demand for large-scale computing, massive data storage, as well as cloud and edge computing integration will continue to grow,” he explained.

Strengthening Digital Infrastructure and Green Investment

In implementing the initiative, Komdigi will consider the readiness of supporting infrastructure in Eastern Indonesia, including fiber optic networks and cable landing stations connected to global communication systems.

“The locations must be supported by infrastructure such as fiber optics and access to submarine cable systems,” he added.

The government will also strengthen coordination among ministries and agencies, as data center development involves multiple regulatory aspects, including electricity supply, environmental permits, water access, and construction licensing.

“Everything must be coordinated properly, from electricity provided by PLN to water supply and environmental permits. That is what we are currently organizing,” Wayan said.

Through this initiative, Komdigi hopes data center development will no longer remain concentrated in Western Indonesia, but will also help accelerate digital economic growth in Eastern Indonesia while reducing infrastructure disparities between regions.

In addition, the government is opening broad investment opportunities for data center development while continuing to prioritize efficiency and sustainability principles, including through the implementation of green data center concepts.

Conclusion

Kementerian Komunikasi dan Digital aims to create a more balanced national digital ecosystem by encouraging data center expansion into Eastern Indonesia. Through infrastructure development, cross-sector coordination, and sustainable investment strategies, the government seeks to strengthen Indonesia’s digital economy while reducing regional infrastructure gaps and supporting the growing demand for AI, cloud computing, and data-driven technologies.
