Kemkomdigi Encourages Young Innovators to Drive Indonesia's Digital Sovereignty Through Satellite Innovation

17 hours ago | Network Infrastructure

Jakarta, INTI - Marking the 50th Anniversary of Indonesia's Satellite Program, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) has called for stronger collaboration to develop the nation's satellite ecosystem, not only as a user of space technology, but also as its designer, manufacturer, and owner.

Director General of Digital Infrastructure Wayan Toni Supriyanto encouraged Indonesia's younger generation to play an active role in developing homegrown satellite technologies as a foundation for the country's digital sovereignty.

"To Indonesia's young generation, don't let the word 'satellite' feel out of reach. Learn about space technology, understand space regulations and policies, and most importantly, believe that your generation can lead Indonesia into an era where we are not only users of satellites, but also their designers, builders, and owners," Wayan said during the 50th Anniversary of Indonesia's Satellite Program at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) headquarters in Jakarta.

Carrying the theme "Digital Sovereignty from Space," the anniversary served as a reminder that, in the digital era, national sovereignty increasingly depends on a country's ability to independently develop and manage its own satellite infrastructure.

Exactly five decades ago, Indonesia made history with the launch of the Palapa A1 satellite, becoming the world's third nation to own and operate a domestic communications satellite system.

"That pioneering spirit is what we must continue to embrace as we face future challenges," Wayan said.

Strengthening Indonesia's Satellite Ecosystem

Wayan emphasized that Kemkomdigi continues to serve as both regulator and facilitator in advancing Indonesia's satellite industry.

The ministry's efforts include optimizing radio frequency spectrum management, coordinating Indonesia's orbital slot allocations at international forums, developing regulatory frameworks that provide certainty for industry players, and fostering an investment climate that supports the growth of the national satellite sector.

"Satellite connectivity is not merely a technical issue, it is a matter of national sovereignty. Countries that control their own satellite infrastructure also secure the future of their information and communication resilience," he explained.

Kemkomdigi is also promoting stronger collaboration among government agencies, industry, universities, research institutions, and innovation communities to strengthen every stage of Indonesia's satellite ecosystem, from research and technology development to component manufacturing and supportive policymaking.

Empowering the Next Generation of Space Innovators

Wayan also congratulated the winners of the Indonesia Aerospace Hackathon 2026, describing them as proof that Indonesia possesses the talent needed to advance its space technology ambitions.

"You are proof that Indonesia does not lack talent. What we need are more opportunities, greater support, and the confidence to believe that Indonesia's young innovators can build our own satellites," he said.

As part of the anniversary celebration, the government also launched the PRISMA Commemorative Stamp – 50 Years of Indonesia's Satellite Program, honoring the nation's achievements in satellite development.

The event also featured a seminar bringing together policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and other stakeholders to formulate strategic recommendations aimed at strengthening Indonesia's satellite industry and accelerating the country's digital transformation.

Through continued collaboration across government, academia, and industry, Kemkomdigi remains optimistic that the pioneering spirit behind the Palapa A1 mission will continue to inspire innovation and help realize Indonesia's vision of achieving digital sovereignty from space as it moves toward Golden Indonesia 2045.

Conclusion

Kemkomdigi is encouraging the next generation of innovators to help build Indonesia's satellite ecosystem as a cornerstone of national digital sovereignty. Through collaboration, talent development, and continued investment in space technology, Indonesia aims to strengthen its position on the path toward Golden Indonesia 2045.
