Jakarta, INTI – Iran and Indonesia continue to strengthen their bilateral relations through technological collaboration. The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, reaffirmed Iran’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Indonesia, particularly in nanotechnology, biotechnology, and nuclear technology.

Boroujerdi made this statement during the commemoration of the 46th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the celebration of 75 years of diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Iran, held in Jakarta on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. On this occasion, he emphasized that Iran possesses various technological capabilities that can be leveraged with Indonesia for development across multiple sectors.

Technology Cooperation as a Key Focus

In a meeting with Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign, Sugiono, on Monday, February 3, 2025, Boroujerdi highlighted the importance of cooperation in emerging technologies. "There are many opportunities for collaboration between our two nations, particularly in new technologies," he stated.

Iran has offered partnerships in various sectors, including space technology. According to Boroujerdi, Iran is prepared to assist Indonesia in developing science-based and innovative technologies, aligning with Indonesia’s goals to enhance its competitiveness in the digital era.

Additionally, healthcare collaboration remains a key focus. The two nations have established a partnership in developing the Robotic Telesurgery Center and expanding telemedicine services in different regions of Indonesia. Furthermore, Indonesia and Iran are exploring opportunities for medical professionals to receive training in advanced medical technologies in Iran.

Iran has also expressed its willingness to collaborate on space technology. "As you know, Iran has expertise in nanotechnology, biotechnology, nuclear technology, and perhaps even space technology, among others. We understand that Indonesia requires some of these technologies," Boroujerdi said.

In addition, Boroujerdi mentioned that he had conveyed Iran’s interest in strengthening cooperation with Indonesia across various fields to Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign. "Indonesia also has capacities that Iran can utilize, such as in trade, economy, and investment. So, we discussed ways to promote these collaborations between Iran and Indonesia," he explained regarding his meeting with the Minister of Foreign in Jakarta on Monday, February 3, 2025.

Economic and Trade Collaboration

Beyond technology, Indonesia-Iran economic relations have shown significant growth. In 2022, bilateral trade reached USD 257.2 million, marking a 23% increase compared to the previous year. The Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) signed in June 2024 is expected to further enhance market access and boost trade between the two countries.

Indonesia’s inclusion in the BRICS economic group also presents new opportunities for collaboration with Iran. Iran’s Minister of Foreign, Abbas Araghchi, stated that Indonesia’s membership in BRICS serves as a strategic momentum to deepen cooperation in economic and technological sectors.

Conclusion

Technological collaboration between Iran and Indonesia continues to grow rapidly, encompassing key sectors such as nanotechnology, biotechnology, and medical technology. Furthermore, economic and trade relations are being reinforced through preferential trade agreements and cooperation within BRICS.

With these various initiatives, Indonesia-Iran relations are expected to deepen further, creating new opportunities for both nations to thrive in the era of globalization and technological innovation.
