Jakarta, INTI - PT Indosat Tbk. has entered into a strategic partnership with Nokia to modernize cellular networks across Indonesia through the implementation of a 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) integrated with artificial intelligence (AI).
Through the partnership, Nokia is ready to deploy a range of next-generation radio devices, such as Habrok and Pandion, Levante baseband, Centralized RAN systems, and advanced network management and automation platforms.
This series of technology solutions is claimed to support smarter operations, improve energy efficiency, and accelerate the development of new service innovations.
The implementation roadmap states that low-band 5G technology will be deployed across the entire network spectrum. Meanwhile, mid-band 5G services are targeted to reach approximately 80% of the company's network within the next 3.5 years.
Supported by AI-based automation and energy-saving features, this initiative is expected to boost operational efficiency and strengthen the implementation of responsible digital transformation.
This 5G project also lays the foundation for national AI Grid connectivity, paving the way for deeper integration of AI capabilities into the telecommunications structure.
"Together with Nokia and Nvidia, we are building the foundation of an AI-integrated network that will improve connectivity quality and deliver a more seamless digital experience for every customer," said Vikram Sinha, President Director and CEO of Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison, on Wednesday, June 11.
Indosat’s 5G Expansion
As of the end of March, or the first quarter of 2026, Indosat's 5G base transceiver stations (BTS) had increased dramatically, reaching 9,972 units, compared to only 107 units in the first quarter of 2025. Indosat has been aggressively adding 5G BTS over the past year.
Meanwhile, Nokia President and CEO, Justin Hotard, stated that the next chapter of network evolution will be determined by operators' ability to combine connectivity, intelligence, and scale.
Together with Indosat and Nvidia, Nokia is helping build the next network evolution with a network capable of expanding 5G coverage, supporting more AI-based services, and creating long-term value.
"This partnership reflects a broader shift in the telecommunications industry, as operators invest in networks capable of delivering high performance at scale while supporting greater efficiency," said Justin.
Nvidia SVP Telecom, Ronnie Vasishta, views this collaboration as a showcase for future transformation. Indosat and Nokia are demonstrating how 5G networks can evolve into intelligence platforms.
"By developing AI-RAN together and moving toward field trials in Indonesia, we are helping build an architecture where AI and connectivity can work together to improve efficiency and unlock new applications," said Ronnie.
Conclusion
Indosat is partnering with Nokia to modernize the national cellular network through the implementation of a 5G Radio Access Network (RAN) integrated with artificial intelligence (AI). This partnership includes the use of the latest generation of radio equipment, a Centralized RAN system, and an AI-based network automation and management platform to improve operational efficiency, save energy, and accelerate service innovation. Indosat CEO Vikram Sinha said the collaboration with Nokia and Nvidia will strengthen customer connectivity and digital experiences.
