Jakarta, INTI - Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to Indonesia, expressed his hope that the integration of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) payment system with India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) will be completed by the end of 2026.
"I'm hopeful that by the end of the year, we will find integration between QRIS and UPI," he said at a press conference in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
Integration Process has Reached Advanced Stage
According to Chakravorty, technical discussions regarding the integration are currently ongoing between payment system operators in Indonesia and their partners in India. The technology integration process has also reached a very advanced stage.
"We hope to conclude the discussions and the technology integration very soon. This is work in progress at a very advanced stage," he explained.
The Ambassador said that the leaders of Indonesia and India have expressed their interest in the integration of the two countries' payment systems to be realized soon.
"Since both the leaders have expressed interest that we quickly do it, I'm sure the message has gone out to people who are negotiating it to quickly conclude those negotiations," said Chakravorty.
Boosting Both Countries’ Economy
Earlier that day, at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indonesia’s President Prabowo Subianto announced plans to integrate the two countries’ payment systems. Modi expressed that integrating the two payment systems could improve tourists' interaction and boost economic transactions between Indonesia and India.
If successfully implemented, Indonesian QRIS could be used for transactions in India, while QR codes from the Indian digital payment ecosystem (UPI) could be used in Indonesia.
Conclusion
Sandeep Chakravorty, Ambassador of India to Indonesia, hopes the integration of Indonesia's QRIS payment system and India's UPI can be completed by the end of 2026. According to him, technical discussions and technology integration between the two countries have entered a very advanced stage. If realized, QRIS users can transact in India, while UPI users can use their payment system in Indonesia.
