Jakarta, INTI - The Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) has requested an official explanation from Meta, as the electronic system operator (ESO) of Instagram, regarding allegations of user data leaks and circulating information related to the password reset process. A clarification meeting was held on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
Password Reset Mechanism Explained
Director General for Digital Space Oversight at Kemkomdigi, Alexander Sabar, stated that Meta explained the password reset process is an internal mechanism conducted through Instagram’s official systems and does not grant password access to any third parties.
Regarding reports of a potential data breach linked to third-party claims, Instagram said that it is still conducting further investigations to verify the validity of the issue.
"No user passwords can be accessed or obtained by any party other than the account owner, and there are no indications of misuse of the password reset feature for data extraction by external parties. The in-depth review is still ongoing, and its results will serve as the basis for further evaluation,” Director General Alexander said.
Government Authority and Digital Protection
He also emphasized that the summoning and clarification of Electronic System Operators (ESOs) fall under Kemkomdigi’s authority, as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 71 of 2019 on the Implementation of Electronic Systems and Transactions.
“The request for clarification from Meta regarding this issue is part of the state’s commitment to protecting citizens’ personal data and safeguarding national digital security,” he stressed.
Kemkomdigi urged the public to remain calm, no to be easily influenced by unverified information, and to continue enhancing vigilance in safeguarding their digital account security.
The ministry stated that it will continue monitoring the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the security of electronic systems and the protection of Indonesians’ personal data.
