Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia aims to achieve an average national internet speed of 100 Mbps within the next two years while making broadband services more affordable for the public.
"We are committed to reaching an average nationwide speed of 100 Mbps within the next two years, while ensuring internet services become increasingly affordable," said Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria in an official statement released on Tuesday.
He emphasized that reliable internet access has become a basic necessity, prompting the government to accelerate digital infrastructure development across the country to support inclusive connectivity and the growth of Indonesia's digital economy.
The 100 Mbps target will be achieved through faster deployment of digital infrastructure, increased investment from telecommunications operators, and wider internet coverage. These efforts are expected to deliver faster, more accessible, and more affordable broadband services nationwide.
Infrastructure Investment to Expand Broadband Coverage
The Ministry is also encouraging telecom operators to expand capital investment by accelerating fiber-optic deployment, strengthening fixed broadband networks, and leveraging satellite technology to provide connectivity in underserved and remote areas.
"We have urged mobile network operators and telecommunications companies to increase their capital expenditure so they can expand services to suburban and remote regions. Our goal is to ensure more people have access to affordable internet with higher-quality services," Nezar said.
He acknowledged that achieving equal internet access across Indonesia remains a major challenge, as reports of areas without adequate network coverage continue to emerge despite ongoing infrastructure development.
Several regions, including parts of Java Island, still experience connectivity gaps and remain categorized as blank spot areas.
"We must close the remaining infrastructure and connectivity gaps, including addressing regions that still lack reliable network coverage," he added.
To strengthen nationwide connectivity, the government is continuing to develop digital infrastructure in underserved regions through various national programs while combining fiber-optic networks, fixed broadband services, and satellite connectivity to ensure broader and more equitable internet access.
