Indonesia Strategically Unites Health AI Research with China

5 months ago | Digital Health

Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia and China have officially launched a strategic partnership to develop artificial intelligence (AI) in the health sector through the Global Health Artificial Intelligence program. The partnership signing took place in Jakarta on Wednesday (September 17, 2025), with key figures from both countries present to witness this significant step. This collaboration emerges as a solution to the challenges faced by modern healthcare, ranging from accelerating vaccine research to optimizing hospital management. The program is spearheaded by Multipolar as the main coordinator, bridging academic research, technology development, and industrial implementation. Through this collaboration, AI research is no longer confined to laboratories but can be applied in real-world settings to save lives and enhance the quality of healthcare services.

Indonesia Becomes the Coordination Hub for the Global Health AI Program
Multipolar plays a key role as the manager and coordinator of this cross-country program. The local technology company connects research from Tsinghua University in China, a leading AI and life sciences center, with Pelita Harapan University (UPH) in Indonesia, a pioneer in applied AI and data science education. "Our mission is to transform research into practical solutions that can save lives and shape the future of healthcare," said Multipolar’s President Director, Harianto Gunawan

Focus from Research to Technology Production
The collaboration covers seven main areas designed to accelerate the utilization of AI in the health ecosystem:

  1. Genomics and precision medicine
  2. Vaccine discovery and predictive analytics
  3. Hospital management optimization
  4. Talent training and researcher exchange
  5. AI health regulation and safety
  6. Technology transfer and commercialization
  7. Establishment of cross-country joint laboratories

This partnership also opens opportunities for a Belt and Road Joint Laboratory in health AI, which will serve as an innovation hub for both countries.

Supported by Indonesia-China Technology Diplomacy
The program operates within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the Global Maritime Fulcrum (GMF), which form the foundation of science and technology relations between the two countries. Prof. Qiu Yong, Chairman of the Tsinghua University Council, reaffirmed China’s commitment to expanding AI collaboration with Indonesia. Meanwhile, UPH President Stephanie Riady called the partnership a strategic step in shaping a generation of AI scientists with real societal impact.

Signing Witnessed by Key Figures
The event was also attended by Indonesia’s Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Brian Yuliarto; Founder & Chairman of Lippo Group, Dr. Mochtar Riady; and China’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Wang Lutong. Their presence highlighted the importance of technological collaboration as a bridge for science diplomacy between the two countries.

Conclusion
The Indonesia-China collaboration through the Global Health AI program marks a significant milestone in leveraging AI technology for the health sector. With Multipolar’s coordination, academic research, technological innovation, and industrial implementation can proceed in synergy. This initiative is expected to accelerate the development of practical healthcare solutions, enhance service quality, and cultivate a generation of AI scientists with global impact.
