Jakarta, INTI - Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) and PT Industri Baterai Indonesia (IBC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding as a strategic step to strengthen collaboration in the development of national battery technology on Monday, July 20, 2026.
The collaboration encompasses research and development in the battery sector, education, human resource development, and competency capacity, as well as various other forms of synergy to strengthen future capabilities.
Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration
Rector of ITB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Tatacipta Dirgantara, M.T., stated that the battery industry is a strategic sector that will play a crucial role in supporting the energy transition and national industrial development. Therefore, collaboration between universities and industry is key to generating impactful innovation.
Tatacipta said that ITB has the comprehensive research capacity to support the development of the battery industry, from mining as a supplier of raw materials, chemical and material processes, to manufacturing engineering, logistics, and fabrication.
"The battery industry is a highly strategic sector. ITB possesses a variety of cross-disciplinary competencies that can facilitate collaboration, from upstream to downstream. We hope this collaboration will not stop at signing documents, but will be realized through various concrete programs that benefit both parties and Indonesia," said Tatacipta.
He also emphasized the importance of a collaborative model that integrates university resources, including researchers and postgraduate students, with industry needs for a quicker, more efficient, and more sustainable technology development process.
Research on Next-Generation Technology
President Director of IBC, Dr. Eng. Aditya Farhan, stated that strengthening human resource capacity and national engineering capabilities is the key for Indonesia to compete in the rapid development of the global battery industry.
"Industry needs are not limited to chemical engineering expertise, but also require collaboration across disciplines to support battery technology development from the research stage to industrial-scale implementation," he said.
In addition to developing lithium-ion and lithium iron phosphate (LFP)-based battery technology, IBC is also focusing its research on next-generation battery technologies, such as sodium-ion batteries, solid-state batteries, and energy storage systems (ESS).
IBC also plans to establish a Center of Excellence in Battery Technology with ITB within the next five years. This Center of Excellence is expected to become a platform for research development, innovation, and human resource development that can support Indonesia's vision of becoming a global hub for the development of the battery and energy storage system industry.
Conclusion
ITB and IBC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in the development of national battery technology through research and development, education, and human resource capacity building. This collaboration covers various disciplines, from upstream to downstream. IBC also encourages the development of next-generation battery technologies. Within the next five years, both parties are targeting the establishment of a Center of Excellence for Battery Technology to strengthen research, innovation, and human resources.
