Indonesia Speeds Up Data Center Expansion Amid Surge in Foreign Investment to Position Itself as Southeast Asia’s Digital Hub

2 months ago | Data Center

Jakarta, INTI - A surge in foreign investment and the rapid expansion of the digital economy are driving Indonesia to accelerate the development of data centers, positioning the country as a key hub in Southeast Asia. Strong demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud computing has become a major catalyst for the rapid expansion of the nation’s digital infrastructure.

Foreign Investment Fuels Indonesia’s Data Center Expansion

Currently, nearly 200 data center facilities are operating across Indonesia, fueled by the entry of global players and regional operators competing to build a robust digital ecosystem. Indonesia’s status as the largest digital economy in the region, combined with land availability and energy supply, continues to attract investors.

One of the major investments comes from Microsoft, which is developing a 48-megawatt data center facility in Karawang. The project is part of a broader US$1.7 billion investment commitment, with plans to establish up to five facilities to form a regional cluster.

In addition, regional operators such as Digital Edge are expanding their footprint. The company has launched its EDGE2 facility in Jakarta and is preparing to develop one of the largest data center campuses in Bekasi, targeting a capacity of up to 500 megawatts by 2026.

The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Investment, has introduced various incentives and streamlined licensing processes to attract further investment in the data center sector. Initiatives such as Nongsa Digital Park, designated as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ), serve as a model for integrated digital ecosystem development.

These efforts are expected to strengthen Indonesia’s position as a leading player in the regional data center industry.

Sustainability Challenges and Green Energy Adoption

Despite rapid growth, the sector faces significant challenges, particularly related to energy consumption and environmental impact. Data centers operate 24/7 and generate substantial heat, requiring efficient and sustainable solutions.

To reduce its carbon footprint, Microsoft is collaborating with the national electricity company to utilize up to 200 megawatts of solar power and aims to achieve water-positive status by 2030. Meanwhile, Digital Edge is exploring geothermal energy and deploying advanced cooling technologies such as direct-to-chip cooling.

Environmental standards are also becoming stricter, with data center sites required to be located in low flood-risk areas and at safe distances from residential zones to minimize social impact.

Talent Shortage Emerges as Key Industry Challenge

Amid the investment boom, Indonesia is also facing a shortage of skilled talent in the sector. The data center industry requires expertise in IT, engineering, and facility management.

To address this gap, vocational institutions are increasingly offering hands-on training programs, including internships and on-the-job training, to prepare a workforce ready to meet industry demands.

With a combination of strong investment inflows, supportive regulations, and a growing focus on sustainable technology, Indonesia is on track to become a regional data center hub in Southeast Asia.

However, achieving this ambition will depend not only on physical infrastructure, but also on the readiness of human resources and long-term commitment to environmental sustainability.

Conclusion

Indonesia’s rapid data center expansion highlights its ambition to become Southeast Asia’s leading digital hub, driven by strong foreign investment and rising demand for AI and cloud services. While progress is significant, long-term success will depend on balancing infrastructure growth with sustainable energy solutions and developing a skilled workforce to support the industry’s future.
