Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government and China’s Hebei Province are strengthening cooperation in smart technology development to support industrial transformation, national downstreaming programs, and increased investment in Indonesia.
The discussion emerged during a meeting between Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and a delegation from the Hebei Provincial Government led by Vice Governor Zhao Chenxin.
Airlangga emphasized that economic relations between Indonesia and China continue to grow, with bilateral trade now reaching three times the value of Indonesia’s total trade with Europe and the United States combined.
“Such investments are expected to expand job opportunities for the public while also increasing the country’s foreign exchange earnings through industrial production,” Airlangga said.
Focus on Downstream Industries and Artificial Intelligence
Airlangga stated that the strategic partnership with China plays an important role in supporting Indonesia’s downstreaming agenda, which is currently focused on mineral sectors such as nickel and bauxite.
He also expressed appreciation for China’s contribution as one of Indonesia’s key partners in developing downstream industries.
In addition, the government is preparing several strategic economic zones dedicated to the development of high-technology industries, including smart technology and artificial intelligence (AI).
Airlangga specifically highlighted the potential of North Sulawesi as an international data connectivity gateway, considering its strategic position and direct connection to global transmission networks leading to the United States, making it suitable for data center development.
Hebei Encourages Chinese Investment Expansion in Indonesia
Hebei Vice Governor Zhao Chenxin welcomed the cooperation opportunities offered by Indonesia and praised the government’s efforts in creating a conducive investment climate.
He affirmed that the Hebei Provincial Government is committed to encouraging businesses from the region to expand their investments and business operations in Indonesia.
Hebei Province itself is known for its rapid development in smart technology and AI-based industries.
Zhao added that the insights shared by Minister Airlangga would soon be communicated to China’s business community as part of future investment considerations.
The meeting also resulted in a shared commitment to maintain close communication, including discussions on the development of shipping lines to improve logistics efficiency between Indonesia and China.
Conclusion
The strengthened cooperation between Indonesia and China reflects a shared commitment to accelerating industrial transformation through smart technology, AI, and downstream industry development. By expanding investment collaboration, improving connectivity, and developing strategic technology-based industrial zones, both countries aim to create long-term economic growth and strengthen Indonesia’s position in the global digital and industrial ecosystem.
