In 10 Years, Will AI Replace Doctors and Teachers? Here's What Bill Gates Thinks

1 year ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Microsoft founder Bill Gates has once again sparked global discussion with his recent prediction about the future of artificial intelligence (AI). In an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show last February, Gates stated that key professions such as doctors and teachers could be replaced by AI within the next 10 years.

According to Gates, medical and teaching skills are currently still considered rare and highly valuable. However, with the rapid development of AI, these skills may become more common and even freely accessible. “With AI, in the next decade, great medical advice and great tutoring will be common and free,” he said.

The World Enters the Era of “Free Intelligence”

In a separate conversation with Harvard professor Arthur Brooks, Gates described the world as entering a new era he called “free intelligence.” AI is now beginning to touch nearly every aspect of human life—from medical diagnoses and treatment recommendations to virtual assistants and intelligent tutoring systems.

“It’s very profound and even a little bit scary because it’s happening so fast, and there’s no upper limit,” Gates told Brooks.

AI : Not Just a Temporary Assistant

While many still view AI as a temporary tool to enhance human capabilities, Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman offers a different perspective. In his 2023 book The Coming Wave, he writes that AI will ultimately replace much of the human workforce.

“These tools will make us smarter and more efficient for a while... but fundamentally, they will replace labor,” Suleyman explains.

The Potential of AI in Education

Despite AI’s potential to replace teaching roles, Gates highlights the upside. He believes AI could actually be a key to delivering high-quality education to people everywhere. When used responsibly, AI can be a powerful force for equal opportunity in learning.

“Breakthrough treatments for deadly diseases, innovative solutions for climate change, and high-quality education for everyone—all of these are possible with AI,” he emphasized.

Bill Gates’ Ambition in the AI World

Gates also shared that if he were to start a new business today, it would be an AI-focused startup. He once challenged OpenAI to develop a model that could score top marks on a high school biology exam—and the model accomplished the task in just a few months.

He considers this achievement as the most important technological advancement since the graphical user interface in the 1980s.

Conclusion: A Threat or an Opportunity?

While some fear the rise of AI will eliminate human jobs, Gates urges society to stay optimistic. AI is not meant to replace humans completely, but rather create new opportunities for learning and innovation. The world may be changing rapidly, but the future is still ours to shape—if we choose to adapt rather than resist.

“There will be things we keep for ourselves. But in terms of building things, moving things, and growing food, over time, these challenges will essentially be solved,” said Bill Gates

So instead of fearing the machines, Gates encourages people to use AI as a tool to develop new skills and unlock human potential. The key lies not in resistance, but in readiness.
