Government Reaffirms Support for the Gaming and Esports Industry

2 weeks ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - The government, through the Ministry of Creative Economy, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of the gaming and esports industry in Indonesia.

Gaming as a Strategic Sector in the Creative Economy

Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, stated that the gaming industry is one of the key strategic subsectors within the national creative economy.

She delivered the statement while attending the 8th anniversary celebration of PUBG MOBILE, titled “8EYOND THE CIRCLE,” held on March 28–29, 2026, in Surabaya, East Java.

According to Irene, Indonesia is not only a large market for games but also has strong creative talent potential to further develop the industry.

“Indonesia has one of the largest gaming communities in the world, ranking second globally after China,” she noted.

Driving Indonesia to Become a Game Creator

The government is encouraging Indonesia to move beyond being merely a consumer of games and to become a developer and creator within the industry.

Irene explained that the gaming sector has a long value chain, involving programmers, game artists, writers, animators, music composers, and community managers.

“The Ministry is committed to building an ecosystem that not only produces professional players but also supports behind-the-scenes talents such as coaches, analysts, broadcasters, and event organizers,” she said.

Gaming Events Boost Local Economy

Meanwhile, East Java Vice Governor Emil Elestianto Dardak highlighted that large-scale gaming events also generate tangible economic impact.

He noted that participants traveling from various regions contribute to local economic activity.

“They come here, they eat, they shop, and events are organized for them. This is real economic impact,” he said.

He expressed hope that the digital industry, including gaming and esports, can deliver broader economic benefits for regional development.

Conclusion

Indonesia’s growing support for the gaming and esports industry reflects a strategic push to transform the sector into a key driver of the creative economy. By fostering talent, strengthening the ecosystem, and leveraging events for regional growth, the government aims to position Indonesia not just as a major market, but as a global creator in the gaming industry.
