Gmail Users Can Change Their Email Addresses, No Need to Make New Account

2 weeks ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - Google has launched a new feature that allows users to change their Gmail (Google Account) email address without having to create a new account or lose their old data. The feature was first tested in India at the end of 2025, and it is now being gradually rolled out globally, starting in the United States on March 31, 2026.

In this update, users who have access to the feature can change their Gmail username, particularly the part before the @gmail.com of the email address. Users can change it directly from their Google Account settings.

Google also set several restrictions on changing email addresses. Users can only change their primary email address once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes in total. This means that a single account can have up to four associated Gmail addresses, including both the old and new ones.

Old Email Address Will Not Disappear

Google also emphasized that old email addresses will not disappear and cannot be deleted or hidden. These addresses also cannot be used by anyone else. The old email address will continue to function as an alternate address. This means users can still sign in to Google services using both the old and new email addresses.

Even if the email address is changed, all messages sent to the old or new address will still arrive in the same inbox. Users can also choose which address to use when sending emails.

Google stated that the email address replacement feature will be rolled out gradually to all users.

Conclusion

Google is launching a new feature that allows Gmail users to change their email address without losing data, which is now gradually rolling out globally after a trial in India. Users can change their username directly from their account settings, but are limited to once every 12 months, with a maximum of three changes. The old address remains stored as an alternative/alias and can still be used to log in and receive email.
