Jakarta, INTI - Energy Shift Institute (ESI) Managing Director Putra Adhiguna said the global shift in energy investment toward clean energy presents a strategic opportunity for Indonesia to strengthen its green industry and accelerate the development of renewable energy.
Global Clean Energy Investment Surpasses Fossil Fuels
Putra noted that global investment in clean energy has exceeded investment in fossil fuels over the past two to three years, making it essential for Indonesia to capitalize on this transition.
“Renewable energy development is advancing at a much faster pace. This is a turning point for Indonesia to rethink its direction,” he said.
According to Putra, China has become a key driver of the global energy transition after committing in 2021 to end financing for overseas coal-fired power plants while continuing to expand its low-emission industrial sector.
He added that the Chinese government introduced the Zero Emission Industrial Park initiative in June last year to further strengthen standards for low-carbon industrial development.
Putra also highlighted India's rapid progress in renewable energy, noting that the country is building solar power capacity equivalent to Indonesia's Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant every five days.
Indonesia Encouraged to Build Domestic Green Industries
Putra emphasized that Indonesia should seize the opportunities created by the global energy transition by expanding its domestic renewable energy industry.
"When we talk about climate risks and climate opportunities, Indonesia is standing at a crossroads. We should focus not only on the risks but also on the opportunities," he said.
He stressed that developing local industries for solar panels, electric vehicles, and other clean energy technologies is essential to reduce dependence on imported products while strengthening the country's industrial competitiveness.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Policy Community of Indonesia (FPCI) will host the Indonesia Net Zero Summit (INZS) 2026 in Jakarta on August 1 under the theme "It's Time to Deliver!"
According to FPCI, the theme underscores the urgency of translating both global and national climate commitments into concrete actions to accelerate the energy transition.
Conclusion
As global investment increasingly flows toward clean energy, Indonesia has a significant opportunity to strengthen its green industrial ecosystem. Expanding domestic renewable energy manufacturing and technology development could enhance the country's competitiveness while supporting its long-term net-zero ambitions.
